Has anyone ever been called out on a PAM they were wearing?

I just have a hard time believing that any highly modded pam would ever get called out by someone who was familiar with the watches. Reasons being...why would you take the watch off or allow super close inspection? and with literally hundreds of panerai models and their various incarnations, who could possibly have memorized font shapes and spacings for all of them to the 1000th of a mm? (And add to this the fact that some PAMs are not even consistent among the same model) Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone has had an experience to the contrary, and if so....details....

Yeah, the odds of getting called out are pretty low. For a number of reasons. First of all (and most important) is that not only has practically nobody even heard of panerai, they just don't care. The only nice watch most people have heard of is Rolex. Most people barely notice the kind of watch someone is wearing. The only people who do are people who are really into watches. The people into watches are just gonna say "nice watch". They're not going to sit there trying to figure out if it's real. Most people don't care. Most people, however, do think it's really weird that people would buy, wear, or collect fake watches. But seriously, nobody cares what kind of watch anybody else is wearing except in very few isolated instances i've seen.

Yep. Most people know Timex, Casio, and Rolex. Some who THINK they know about watches include Seiko, Movado, and Tag in that mix. Rest are jewelers and horology buffs. As for jewelers, most of theym are exactly that, jewelers. I don't give a rat's ass whether I wear a rep or gen to AD's/jewelers. It's my wrist, and it's my watch. I bought it cuz I like it. Hell, most modded PAMs are better quality and more expensive than gen Movados anyway. If I wanna pull the "I'm richer than you, or I'm better than you" stunt somehow, then even wearing a real Panerai is NOT even in my mind as to achieving the smug assholeness; I'll be doing that some other way, i.e., years of education, car, fancy pants, nice underwear, etc.

When I do wear my "ultimates" to AD's, noone notices, or if they do, they kiss my ass for the entire stay; I just have a stance and a look that says "it's not a good idea to be an asshole and pull my wrist towards your nose and sniff without buying me dinner first, because I'll probably poke your eyeball" look. Again, as for AD's, it's no different than a Lexus sales manager not being able to tell you anything about the torque in the engine. Now for horology buffs and (mostly) a-hole paneristis, they'll simply say, "nice rep, gotta do something about that hue tho'."

Thus, wear it proud. If it looks good, and most people don't know a seiko from a psycho, just wear it well.

Yeah I agree even in AD's most of the sale persons don't know all that much about brands other than Lolex and Breitling. I was in a high end AD in Palm Beach a couple of month's back, they were having their yearly watch event. I was wearing my Angus ultimate 111E and I walked in to check out their Panerai's (they had a few pieces that caught my eye a 176, 183, and I also tried a 212) and as I told him which models I wanted to see, he said you Paneristi's know so much abouth these watches (he didn't even know which number corresponded to which watch) and he looked at mine at said I bet that's not your only one, I smiled and said no I have a few others . Of course I laid mine down on the pad as I tried the other watches on, I was still checking out the 183 and he was putting some the other watches away when he grabs my watch and starts to put it in the case! It wasn't until he looked at the back and saw their were no stickers, that he set it back down and said "they all look the same to me" I told him he could keep mine and I'd take the 176 off his hands  Anyhow I had a drink of champagne and took home a monster sized Panerai catalog, so it was a productive day at the AD :D. I think the chances of actually getting called out are slim to nill unless you go to a Panerai boutique or a Paneristi GTG wearing your rep

Neither of which I would do; it's significantly different from going to a jeweler's AD. Pam boutique (only one in LA in CONUS) have Paneristis work there, or rather sales there become Paneristis. The Hues are a giveaway for these guys really, unless they sniff the watch... in which case, like I said, I'll kick them in the nuts... unless they bought me dinner first.

by hue i guess you are talking about the ar coating? rbj has a gen pam from one of his customers in japan and the ar coating on it is exactly the same as my 177h and 111h from ruby.

the panaristis don't want to admit their sacred cow is one of the most inconsistant watch makers in the world. their watches vary between prodution runs. everybody likes to complain about the swiss made on a 111h being too close to the 6 but in fact there are gens out there like that. another one is the crown sitting up against the case. gen crowns are all over the place. the pin in the cg isn't always flush with the top. gen pam ar range anywhere from pinkish purple, blueish purple and greenish yellow purple.

then you get into the people that have damaged their watch and had the ar coating either polished off or redone by some place other than panerai. the color of the ar coating is a very bad place to start if you are going to call out any watch.

I actually heard from a friend who owns a 111H and witnessed in person that A/R coating on gen(also a J series I saw at the AD) is almost invisible. But it does give off the blue hue under very certain angle. I am actually going to visit this friend with gen 111H in a week or so, I will confirm this again. I wish I had a rep 111H to bring with me so I can do a side by side comparison, I think FlavorFlav already did this with his.
