Happiness is a non-sunken datewheel

So I took the plunge and got the 7753 version of the 250

Yes I am aware of all of its flaws.

But nothing gets me more stoked than looking down and seeing a huge date (even in the wrong thin font) without obstruction from the datewindow or a shadow, and being able to advance the date with the 10 o'clock pusher. The 7753 movement is like a dream, everything about this watch is silky smooth. Straight from guangzhou it is running at COSC standards (+3 sec/day) without any finagling. Makes me want to never buy an A7750 watch again.

I cannot wait to make a few important changes to this watch. By the time I am done the only thing left from this watch will be the movement...

They are quite expensive, but I sense that the crunch on haute horologie in this economy will cause ETA / Swatch to rethink their policy of restricting sales of their ebauches. I suspect that a load of 7753's made their way to Asia recently because they HAD to be sold to somebody. Having all these 7753's "fall off a truck" unfortunately has not saved me any money in getting this one.

I guess you are right...DSN now has the 2892 power reserve 027 & 028 available for purchase too...Rare and expensive at the time when they were available...A year or two ago, they were said to be discontinued for good...

Very nice!! A daylight without a sunken DW is a keeper in my book. Love it!! :) ...now all you need is a Lello DW! ;)

Rooster I keep seeing this Lello DW thing mentioned on this forum. What is it and why would you get one if the date wheel isn't sunken? I'm just starting to learn about PAMS so forgive my ignorance.
cheers

Lello is a member from RWG2 that had a datewheel made with thicker, more correct font. I believe he's sold all of his stock, but you may be able to find one from a private seller...

Also...Lello had been plaqued by a number of bad DW batches in the recent past, basicaly let down by his Italian manufacturer, not much his fault really. Ziggy had long ago stopped offering Lello DW wheel replacement services.
I like the guy and have done a fair bit of business with him in the past, but these aren't exactly cheap spares...

In lieu of 'perfect' long gone Finepic's DWs close second are the upgraded DSN DWs, IMO. These fit perfectly and don't come with issues Lello ones had.

Caution is to be excercized if you're in the market for Lello's 7750 or 2892/2893 DWs, that's all.

That's right. I had a Lello DW that was way misprinted too. But Lello is a good man, and he actually took it back and refunded me the money. But most of the Lello DWs I have seen or still have are of excellent quality. I guess if you find one for sale in the trade section, there's indeed a small risk that it won't be 100% perfect. But other than that, a Lello DW with the correct thick font would really improve the face of that Daylight. Which, mind you, is already a stunning rep!!

I will tell you this my friend, with the gen dial you have I think you can wear it with confidence for a long time until you get your datewheel. Nobody is going to know, I don't think. Wear it well and congrats! :D

Thanks R2D4! The watch is actually nicely finished, and looks nearly swiss quality-- That's the frustrating thing about it, it is finished well, but it has so many flaws at the same time. Looking at the watch, you would say it looks great, and I don't want to discourage anyone from buying the 7753 version of this watch, mind you, it actually is impressive to hold and wear.

Some have asked me to enumerate its flaws. I will do this and list some pros too:

7753 edition PAM 250

Pros: lugs very nicely finished, brushed surfaces sanded crisply like gen PAMs, not wavy like they just came out of the stamping machine and then sloppily brushed
Bezel sides polished like the gen, front brushed/sanded nicely
CG is very thick, there is potential to polish the front to the compound curve of the gen
Cons: Lugs too short to accept standard bracelets, some thicker straps may rub against the case
Tachymetre is wrong for this watch, font of bezel markings is too deep and too bold, front surface of bezel is too wide, and the sapphire on 7753 watch is smaller in diameter than a standard issue PAM Luminor case as a result
bezel is not tall enough, this combined with shallow caseback make this watch less tall than gen
Crown is thick but has 36 ridges, gen has 48
Caseback is also shallow like the bezel relative to the gen watch, and has a phantom case marking without serial
This could also be a pro for someone with access to laser engraving :)
Dial has no recesses for subdials
Subdial hands have lume markings shaped incorrectly, shape of subdial hands is too narrow, not bulbous enough
shape of case is not as asymmetric as other luminor cases (with the CG off the watch should look like the left side of the case is too big compared to the right, but then balanced with the CG. This case looks nearly symmetric withe CG removed)
Datewheel has the wrong thin font.
Chrono pushers are too small. They should line up perfectly with the outside edge of the crown on the gen.
Sapphire is nicely domed, but has too much blue AR and too much distortion of the dial front
Dial is poorly lumed as are the hands
The hour chrono accumulator numerals (12 3 6 9) are not lumed on any rep, and I have yet to find any luming professional who will tackle this on the rep dial. Luckily we have a gen dial for that purpose :)
The lettering on the dial is completely off, looks completely not gen, even the 7750 is a vast improvement. Wrong font, too tall in proportion, an instant tell.

Hmm.. this is just for starters...

Happiness is a non-sunken datewheel, but what about the rest

Just when I was starting to get attached to my Ziggified 250 :( Nope, he hadn't lumed the 12,3,6,9 on the sub-dial (but, as you said, no lumer does). I polished the bezel edge myself, as Ziggy felt the bezel would be too hard to remove and may damage the tach numbering. Funny thing is, the beze just popped right off when I gently pushed the exacto knife in the visible gap :D

I even found a laser engraver for the S/N. And I was going to order a Leo (not Lello) date wheel, but now I don't know...

I just spent 30 minutes trying to press an exacto knife between the bezel and case... NO LUCK.
I can not see any part that appears open enough to get something in there. I can see its not all one piece, but DAMN its tight.

I've removed and replaced four DSN/Cartel auto titanium case bezels as well with the exacto knife. But these did not come of so easily, and I made sure to use a lot of scotch tape to cover the case and bezel edge - so as not to scratch them.

I used a box-cutter exacto knife (the bigger ones). The edge is "V" shaped. I just put the edge on the very small gap and "rocked" the knife until it pushed in. I then repeated that all around the bezel. After a while you will end up with a big enough gap to just pop it off. But I suppose some bezels may be tougher to remove. Like I said, I've done it a few times now, so I'm quite comfortable doing it. If you aren't, then don't try - you may just end up putting some deep scratches in the case.
