Hand misalignment VSF

Dear Paneristi, yesterday I got the second VSF-Pam with a misalignment between the hour- and the minute-hand. When you use the fast hour adjustment the hour-hand always snaps into a position, that is roughly 15 to 20 minutes to "slow". I had this bug before on a VSF 389. A watchmaker could fix it, but I am not very happy in sending a watch again to a watchmaker, waiting weeks and paying lots of money ;-)
So my question is the following: Is there a know "little trick" or a quick fix to bring the both hands again in a correct alignment? Or is this a job, that is better done by a pro?
Thanks!

Hi :) I'm not sure about the quick-set function and be happy to be corrected by someone with more knowledge, but as far as I understand one has to take off the hands completely and align them when putting them back in place.

If I understood correctly, you are saying that both hands, minute and hour, do not align when a full hour is shown? Like, 6 o clock and one is behind? If so, the hands need to be re-attached which is a 5min job and should not be expensive...

Thanks Plaasbaas and Dohdoh . Then I will continue my search for a local watchmaker, who touches reps ;-)

My "problem" are not the costs, but the long waiting times for such a small job at the known Rep-watchmakers. But when this is such an easy job, I think, I can persuade the locals.

Does the misalignment happen only when you use the fast hour setting function or are the hands always misaligned?
What happens if you set the minute hand to 12 before using fast hour setting?

+1 here on this too or I’m wondering anyway. How does it look at midnight? At 12:00 am, the date changed and everything should be lined up. Or at 12:00 midnight is the hour hand 30% of the way to the 1?

On vsf modes with the hour jumping feature, I noticed the hour hand can toggle between moving along the hour indicies or alone the halfway point between them, depending on the position of the minute hand.

Interestingly I had the same issue on one watch with the clone movement. The hour and minute hand were approx 30 mins off, ie: when the minute hand was at 12, the hour hand was between hour numbers. Randomly happened after about 6 months with watch. Only solution I found was to reset hands… just make sure that you do so with date change in mind. Otherwise you might have date change at 7pm…as I learned the hard way.

The misalignment is permanent, no matter which setting function I use. I only mentioned the fast hour setting, because the hour hand "snaps" in this case in the wrong position when you set the crown to another position while the hour hand is in the correct position.

When I set the minute to 12 before using the fast hour setting, it looks like this (pic 1). Same misalignment after using the fast hour. The hour is 15 minutes off as you can see in pic 2.

See my answer to kilowattore . There seem to be no difference, in which position the minute hand is when I use the fast hour. In the end it "snaps" to the misaligned position.

Yes, I had the same issue with a VSF 389 some month ago. But because it needed a inspection anyway, I sent the watch to a watchsmith who fixed this issue.

Hands now need to be reset, a watchsmith has to take them off and place them back in place. That's a 5 minutes job it shouldn't be that expensive.
My concern was whether the hands were aligned before using the fast setting function, in which case watchsmith should look into said function or you should avoid using it if possible.

Thanks! I will bring her to a local watchsmith when this is no rocket science.

Sorry, I don't want to hijack your thread JayBee0815, but now that kilowattore mentions it: I read somewhere on this forum that the quick-set function on rep movements often is a weakness, and it is best to avoid using it altogether, just as is it advisable to avoid using the chrono function on reps. Is this good advice in general?

No problem, this is a interesting question. If this is true, my old watchwinders will have a comeback ;-)

I can’t confirm that. I have disassemble many movements with chrono, with quick date set function, without and even PAM movements. The quickset function is not a weakness at all. There are other parts which are way more vulnerable so this can’t be generalized. Of course there are movements where the quick set function should be avoided, for example the GMT timebomb movements which include a spring that tends to break very easy, but this cant be set for reps in general. For example Submariner movements with Asian 3135 have no issues with quickset as far as i know. Asian 28xx does, but also just a very low percentage due to imprecise keyless work.

Just to make this clear - both of the VSF-Pams with this bug where bought M2M from Owners, who only had them for a short time and who probably didnt even notice the misalignment. So I guess this is a quality issue from VSF in the production/assembly and not a failure that occurs after using something.

Yes, I would assume that this function ceases to work completely, not only the hour hand dragging behind, as soon as it defaults.

I envy people who could use a watch with an out of sync for 30 minutes and not notice.

I always had a slight tendency towards a mild form of OCD, but spending too much time on this platform seems to make it worse :D
