i am interested in the grand carrera calibre 17 quartz version all black. after searching through this forum when it comes down to accuracy it seems most are recommending the rubber strap version. when looking at various websites like replicamake and watcheden the rubber strap version seems to be cleaner- such as the red subdial markers at 3 and 9. however, i really would prefer the black leather strap with red stitching.

to me it seems weird that essentially these are the same watch just with a different strap. can i assume if i purchased both watches the straps should be interchangeable?

oh, and thanks UGODEROSA for answering all my pm's.

I got the leather one from WBK. It's great....no complaints at all about the leather or stitching. Honestly I had too many rubber strap watches so the leather is a welcome change.

how are the red subdial markers at 3 and 9 oclock? i have seen some photos where they look like they have pretty rough edges.

also, does the black pvd coating hold up well to scratches? thanks.

Why the quartz? I bought a grand carerra when i was starting out and wont wear it now because of the ticking seconds... i wish i had spent the extra 50 bucks to get an automatic... just my 2 cents...

I am going the quartz route because I do not want to deal with potential issues of mechanical failure in addition I want a piece that keeps accurate time.

What do you mean about the ticking seconds?

Yup. The quartz seconds needle ticks vs. a mechanical which sweeps. Anyone who knows anything about watches can spot that right away. You get mechanical movements that are rock solid and keep very good time. The asian movements are much more reasonable that the so called "swiss" ones that the dealers sell and worth the money. Also its cool to have a little "machine" strapped onto your wrist :)

Actually, with the quartz Cal. 17, it has no seconds (seconds at 3 on a subdial wheel on the gen). So there is no "ticking".

Reason for quartz? Reliability.

Very few people are that knowledgeable about this model so the chances of getting called out are slim. I never try to pass of my reps as gens, and perhaps the OP is the same.

Most of my reps are mechanical, but I do have a couple quartz reps as well. There is something to be said about never having to wind your watch, never having to worry about its accuracy, or never having to deal with maintenance (other than battery changes).

The subdial wheel ticks. Its like that on my 36. Agree that chances of anyone spotting it are slim but just that when I wear mine now I feel like the ticking subdial is staring at me..:watching:

I actually own three gen tag heuer watches. My first two are quartz. No issues. My last one is a link automatic. It never kept perfect time and eventually my crown had to be replaced after my constant readjustments of the time. $450 for that. I love the grand calibre. I am actually considering purchasing the gen. However, it is hard for me to stomach paying 7k for a watch that will not keep accurate time. If tag heuer made the same model in a quartz I would buy it in a heartbeat.

For me a watch that does not keep accurate time is essentially a paperweight.

I have the Cal.17 and the Cal.36 in the 7750 cased quartz versions. You are correct about the Cal.36 having a ticking disc (at 6), but on the Cal.17, there is no seconds disc, or second hand, so no ticking on the Cal.17 quartz.
