just received gmt ll batman from andiot watch. watch looks great but was told by andiot not to use for swimming. took to local high end watch repair shop for pressure testing. good for everday use but not swimming. they will open watch and check, replace gaskets, approx. $100. watch is supposed from clean factory with dd3285 movement. question why factories won't go a step further and install $1 worth of gaskets for waterproofing

  • Nuanced Answer:
    • Most modern sports replicas can be made water proof. The issue is usually not the construction but the assembly of watches. Missing O-rings, improperly seated gaskets, pinched gaskets, loose caseback from factories, unlubed/dry gaskets these are all common items seen on replicas (yes even modern ones) that can compromise water resistance. And if you want to criticize this, well the people who assembly replicas are not exactly the cream of the crop watch makers adhering to standards, now, are they? Just accept this as part of the replica game.
    • My personal experience is that almost all my VSF/Clean watches have passed all water tests with proper greased seals. Cheaper replicas too, such as my M+ FXD and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. But I’ve had a few that failed initial tests straight out of the gate. So never assume, always test. You can end up with a paper weight because you were too cheap to spend $30 on a test.
Factories goal is to make money and optimize cost. The people assembling your watch are not high end watch makers. They're underpaid, following no standards. It's been this way since the beginning of time. No factory will guarantee water resistance even if they properly assemble it. You are thinking in the mindset of "legal" watches. But this is still "illegal" goods.

You say you would pay more. But business wise, a $50 increase in watch price may lead to decrease in sales. Remeber - non western people buy this watch too. South East Asia, China. $50 increase may be 1/10th their monthly salary.

They do, I've had numerous watches tested direct from China and they're in general water proof.
The parts are there, they just don't test them and they aren't guaranteed.
Mostly you'll find it's just the caseback isn't tightened up enough.
