Gen Pam owners - is it worth it

There are threads on this now and then but I feel this a bit different as I am a big fan of the brand and have over 30 reps. Even though I cannot wear them all I am more affectionate toward my Pams than any other watched I own.

I have a couple gen Omegas and Rolex, plus many other mid-tier Swiss, and numerous Japanese.

I am considering another purchase and a new PAM560 is on my radar. I can get one grey market from a great dealer here in Tokyo for about 4100 USD before 8% tax.

What do owners of many Panerai reps and gens think?
If you are a true fan of the brand does the gen honeymoon last?

As someone seriously considering their first gen PAM purchase, I'd like to know this too.

I owned two rep base models and loved then so decided I had to have a gen so I picked up a 380 that was really cool, but then my head was turned by the 372 so I kinda fell outta love with the 380. Rather than get another gen Pam I flipped the 380 for a gen IWC and picked up a rep 372 on m2m. So far it's been a good decision because it's a really good rep (apart from the lume) and power reserve is like 3 days!! Personally I don't think I'd get another gen Pam as they seem to be very well repped at the moment!!

My Pam000 I bought after my H-Fac and Noob Reps. The case has a better finish but on the wrist no one notices. No one cares. I've worn a Gen 372, 389 and 305. The Subs were heavier and looked thinner and wore thinner on the wrist. So yeah it depends on the Pam. I personally will never buy a Gen ever again. I'd rather spend the money towards stuff for my house or even a newer car.

joes - Do you feel the IWC more satisfying as a gen piece? I have been looking at IWC as well.

Yes, Ive got a 3777-01 and must admit it's far more satisfying to wear because the dial is so much more interesting and the size offers real presence on the wrist. I love it.

not worth it,i own a gen 183 back then, but it's just so identical including the weight and feel (eventhough it is not a super rep)
the one that is really worth buying for a gen PAM is the exceptionally beautiful pam 289

If you go gen panerai, go with something that isn't repped well. The super reps out there now like the 111 are just too good to justify buying gen.

My condition was that only in house "P" movements would be considered.

Pams are the last ones I would ever buy in gen again. The reps are almost all super reps imo. Gens can be had for $5,000 and the rep will cost you $300... it's not just the price but also the quality of the rep. Pams are everywhere around here. Its like the new Rolex submariner.

erekose, I have to agree with what lovesRM said about ubiquity... I see PAMs all the time on the subway here, it just doesn't seem to be worth paying $5000 to have the same kind of watch everyone else does, especially when you have such a huge collection of good reps. If you bought the gen, would you really be able to give it the wrist time it deserves? How would you feel if it didn't stand out from your reps that much in any way?

Have to agree a bit atgm...the inhouse movement gives it some more substance...but yeah....
Wrist time allocation is a great point too. Though I would not sell them my PO, Speedy, Exp1, and Exp2 don't get tons of wear already.

I have 4 genuine Omegas and 1 Genuine Rolex plus numerous reps , custom builds and one tremendous Franken, Will I get a genuine PAM ..Yes eventually. We have so many great Reps but its nice to have a few Genuines to measure the reps against.

erekose Obviously the only solution is to get a boutique to loan you one to wear for a week or so to judge for yourself! ;)

If you love watches investing in multiple genuine models is not financially feasible , particularly with new models arriving regularly, the high end Rep market caters for the person who loves to have access to choice at a reasonable price
