Gen Advice

I have read that quite a few of you guys own at least one gen Panerai. I need some advice.....

I am very close to getting a 164 GEN in LNIB condition for about a grand under what I would have to pay at an AD. The major reason I haven't bought a GEN yet is because I live about 3 hours from the closest AD, made the trip once and they didn't have anything I was interested in.... and I can't believe how many people are offering their used watchesn online for virtually brand new price. But this deal is around 25% off of retail + tax so if I am buying I think now is the time.

My first problem is that I live in an area now where people don't wear Panerai and other high end watches. None of my friends even know what a Panerai is let alone that I wear reps of them :D . I honestly have only seen a gen through the glass at an AD real quick. So I guess my question is.... is it worth it?? Is the quality that much better?? Obviously, this is a rep forum and you guys are here for a reason, because these watches our dealers have are dynamite, but at the same time some of you still own gens.

My main reason for wanting a gen 164 or 104 is that I need/want the date function for my daily watch and to be honest the two auto Pams I have: 050 and 104 just kind of suck. The date mag blows, they run at least 2 minutes off every day and the feel of them is just not as nice as some of the historic reps that seem to get the most attention from the Davidsons and quality rep retailers.

Another good reason to buy is I really believe that I can buy this watch, wear it, enjoy it and and if for any reason I need or want to sell itI can get out of it for virtually what I paid. I have at least 3k in reps that if I decided to liquidate them I would be lucky to get half of that back. I have been scouring the market for almost a year now and I can't believe how well the resale value holds on most 3k-6k watches. The only risk obviously is losing it, theft or major damage.

I am by no means a billionaire but I can definitely afford to buy whatever watch I want to wear, but still to spend that kind of money on a watch... I am just not sure. My father got me into watch collecting and while he is not into reps he has about 50 watches, not a one worth more than 500 bucks. He is retired and prolly 10 times more financially stable than guys with 3 daytonas, but he would never dream of paying 5k for a watch.

Ok, to make a long story short, I guess I would like to buy one but I am looking for someone to say: if you can afford it, it is worth it, there is nothing like a GEN OR you are crazy to pay 10x the $ for the same watch. Buy another rep and give 3k to charity. 8)

I will prolly delete this in a few days so people can't search me out for years to come and find out that I am a jackass :p

Buy it for yourself as you are the one wearing it. So what if noone else knows what it is. It is your money. Maybe you will set the trend and others will follow in your lead. If you dont buy it you will regret it.

I guess you misunderstood me a bit. By saying no one else wears one around here, I meant.... I haven't seen one in person enough to compare my reps to it. Thanks for the reply though.

I think this is one decision you need to make well on your own. Everyone has or will have a different opinion as to what you should do and how you should spend your money. You need to find out whats right for you...when making a large purchase like this I think its nice to have input but the decision rests on you. I also think that bottom line is, if it makes you happy and you have no reserves about purchasing it then go for it, if on the other hand something keeps holding you back then you need to figure out exactly what that is....must be a reason right.
Now, not that I cant afford a Gen. Panerai, rolex, etc... but for me I would be scared to death that I would loose, break it, have someone attempt to steal it, or any other reason, therefore I choose to wear reps. for the simple matter that if one of the above reasons happens I dont feel so bad. I would much rather be out a couple hundred than a few thousand, know what I mean....I would also have a gen. insured hands down, no questions asked and it would probably sit in a safety deposit box or vault so for me theres no real point because I just wouldnt get any satisfaction out of it anyway.

Just my .02

I gotcha, I thought maybe you were meaning noone would know what it is. By all means buy it. If I didnt have my two kids tugging on my pants all the time, I would buy a few gens.
I didnt do much of the running around gig either. I was married at 24 and had my first kid at 26. Wouldnt change a thing. While I was investing in real estate, others were belly up at the bar. They are still renting and I am sitting in a nice house.

If you like the watch get it. If you are not sure - get a rep and see if it grows on you. If you like the rep you will most likely LOVE the gen.

If not, dump it. You won't lose that much.

Hasselblad (cameras) used to have a program that would let you buy their stuff at deeply discounted prices if you were enrolled in school - almost 40% off what the stores were selling cameras at. Knew a guy who got one, then dropped out of school and sold the camera and made money.

Get it.

do not worry about it deing stolen or lost at the bottom of the lake. your homeowners insurance should cover it. just have your jewelery coverage adjusted if needed and have it appraised.

if you're not certain and asking us for an opinion, i would say hold off on it and think some more. That is still quite a bit of Dough to drop on an impulse buy.

The thing is when you know there's a watch you must have a gen of, you WILL know.

Every latest rep i've been getting was a "this is the one i must buy a gen of!" but a couple weeks later and another rep on my wrist, it's the same old story "This is the one i must buy a gen of!"

There is one rep i go back to often, so i am seriously thinking of buying a gen of that.

A gen Panerai by the way is quite nice vs. rep. All the edges are smooth, lume is great, datemag and datefont nice and big... quiet and runs like silk... you can goto paneristi get-togethers and not get yelled at/called out :D

when you visit Las Vegas or other large ritzy metropolitan areas, people will notice your pannie... all the other areas aren't too keen on them yet. I was at the Bloomingdales in San Francisco and noticed 3 different guys sporting a pannie.

If you want a recognizalbe brand, blah... rolex. But what fun would that be? Go get a glashutte :D

funny you say that, at first glance about a year ago I thought the Paner---ist--i board looked cool.... but now after reading it for a year, most of those guys are the biggest tools in the world. Believe me, the last thing I want this watch for is so I can drive around taking pictures of my hand out the window, in front of street signs, hanging from xmas trees, with pictures of half eaten meals and shots of the ups man bringing my new watch to the door.

Well, I'm in the same kind of dilemma myself I guess. In the past I saved for nice cars, and now own a sports car that is truly unique. Yet I still yearn for a rare Porsche, or the ultimate.. a Ferrari. However each of those seem out of my range now.

So, I accidentally stumbled on RWC one day, then found RWI. I've always loved machines, and these tiny ones have certainly got my interest. A couple weeks ago I stopped into Tourneau watches in NYC, and spotted a gold cased carbon fiber dialed Pam I fell in love with. Lol, so I know how hard it is to get something lie this off your mind!

I say go for it; hell, it's got to be cheaper than a new one from 5th avenue!
