A buddy of mine who collects gens really liked my 177h rep. He has a rollie and a few tags. he knows I collect reps. anyway he went and brought a gen 112. When comparing side by side his 112 to my 177h besides the dial font issues, the one thing I noticed immediately was the actual size of the watch. the gen case was noticeably bigger. Granted I was comparing a Ti watch to a chromed watch so I would expect a difference due to the chroming. However, I would guess the reps was a few 2 to 4mm bigger.
the one thing I was very impressed with was the 6497 movement in comparison to the gen. Now if the rep maker could only correct the dial font and the blue "officine panerai" font on the movement bridge. Otherwise for my $360 ilo his $3900 I think I got the better deal :D

Polished SS, not chrome on that 112.

Interesting bit about the case size, though. Who's 177 is it?

sure you get the better deal....Panerai makes on a $ 4000 watch...at least $ 3000...
what do you think is the real value of a gen Pam ?.... ridicolous !!

You mean thicker ?

Reps with exibition back 44mm Luminor Pams come with thin caseback, it's much thicker on gen's. I believe one of the reasons would be thicker sapphire glass Panerai uses on their see-thru casebacks, and possibly to compensate for slightly thicker dial assembly on sandwich-dial Luminor.

cheers,

No the gen was wider diameter on the polished chrome 112. very noticable. mine 177h is from Davidsen. the thickness was more on the gen as well but I did not notice that as much. they both had the sapphire caseback and those looked almost identical, except the thickness. the caseback is a very good part of the rep for matching the gen wrt the fonts.

I agree with road rash' comments. True for my gen 177 too.

Fit and finish on the gen is also of different caliber... (well duh right? ;) )

I have two gen PAMs, and I don't notice any size difference (maybe a little due to the caseback). I also have a 177H, it "feels" smaller due to its light weight.

You can sense the difference on a side-by-side comparison based on the finish/quality of feel and crispness if you know what I mean. I know the gen owners out there know what I'm talking about.

True! Only side-by-side comparisons and/or close inspections give it away!

TIP: Get a FAT crown, and (almost) no-one can tell the diff ;)
