For new members-tricks for finding the watch of your dreams

Hi Guys,,,, I'm all too curious to know how many new members actually take time to read and dig into the forum rather then just show up in search of a submariner and only care about one watch or even know there is such a thing as a whole world of high end watches other than Rolex? My suspicion is that for every one new guy that comes searching for a sub and actually finds far more, there's at least ten maybe as many as fifty that never gives this forum the respect it deserves and by doing so would gain a wealth of knowledge, many beautiful watches, submariners included and even more importantly the best asset this forum has to offer, the friendship of the most unique individuals in the world, RWI's members.

The first problem that new members run into while trying to figure out how to find the watch of their dreams without spending what most hard working people would consider to be out of reach is there's simply far too much information here to ever find the proverbial needle in the haystack without some help. This problem is for the most part understated and is in fact a recipe for disaster and is the beginning of the first clash between senior members and what is commonly referred to around here as "NOOBS". You may ask yourself what is the difference between a new member and a noob? The best way to answer this is to simply say a noob is a new member that doesn't take the time to listen and assess whats going on around here and then tactfully work towards finding the answers they seek. They demand answers to questions that are worded so poorly the only correct answer seems disrespectful and many times leads to unpleasant confrontations that angers the noob(new member) and causes admin here to admonish the senior member for "not being helpful" and/or being "overly sarcastic". These situations are unpleasant for everyone and do not present the forum in the best possible light therefore admin is absolutely correct in their efforts to keep RWI's reputation as a friendly and helpful place in tact.

The all time number one question that sparks these types of scenarios is of course, the one we've all learned to hate around here and trust me, if you as a new member should wind up staying here very long you also will begin to join in on the loathing, this one questions is simply "Who has the best Sub?".The question is the epitome of a UNANSWERABLE question and here's why: There are literally hundreds of watches within the category of submariner and that's just the ones that are made by Rolex, there are all different shapes ,sizes and colors of submariner, there are men's subs and some subs are made for women also. Of course, we know that the noob asking this loaded question is looking to buy a replica Rolex but even with this basic knowledge in mind there are literally hundreds if not thousands of replica Rolex's available therefore there is no possible way of knowing what image of a replica Rolex a new member may have in mind when that question is asked?

These types of redundant questions leads to sarcastic answers and then animosity between the new member and senior members ,who view the questions as lazy also between senior members and the RWI staff and admin. Ultimately the only way to ease some of these unpleasantries is for the new member to be guided to a greater understanding of what many of us have come to know and love as a delightful and insightful hobby. Now for the new member just hoping to buy one watch and go, unfortunately there may never be a really good answer and it's doubtful that this post will even be given more then a seconds glance but for the new member that's willing to spend just a little bit of time reading and listening then you my friend are destined to find even more beautiful watches then you've ever imagined and build long lasting friendships with a wild bunch of highly skilled unique individuals the modern world of horology have barely given a notice to and for good reason, the best sailors ever to sail the sees were and remain, the pirates...

Welcome to the dark side of replica time piece collecting....

Very nice Mitch. Nice job. I agree.

I find myself getting impatient now and ticked when I see a new person asking silly questions even after we tell them where to go to read. I try to be helpful and not be rude, and yes it is sometimes hard not to be when the same question is being posted over and over and over each week. But I guess to their defense how are they supposed to know it's been asked so many times.

There really is just a motherload wealth of invaluable information here. I still find it quite amazing and I came here just stuck on one watch like you said, but since being here have opened my eyes to a lot of others.

I try to be helpful because when I first joined there were several people that kind of just guided me along to get me started. And I did ask those noob questions too. I went back through my first few posts the other day and was kind of embarassed to even read the stupid crap I asked. But once I started reading it all started making sense.

Great post. Thanks Mitch.

Brilliant post, Mitch!
Unfortunately, it wouldn't change anything. Only Administration can do something, that can change the scene. Otherwise we'll see "Hey, I'm new, point me in the right direction!!!" every freaking day, and every freaking hour.
What I would like to see, it the concrete propositions. For example - No CB and posts for a week. No sales for a month. You can continue with other ideas. We need to change rules.
Why can't we collect all valuable (and sane) proposals, and ask Administration to impost it?
We have over 65,000 members... Really??? Don't make me laugh. Maybe, 100 active members, 500 not-so-active members, and tons of lazy freeloaders.
Did anyone notice, that so many elders don't post anymore?

I understand Luth's feelings on this, I think some of the suggestions are extreme,,,,but when I need to know details of precise measurements I know I can ask Luth and he knows,,,,, it's pretty remarkable honestly, so we all must seem like novices compared to Luth,,, that said I could see how some of the really hardheaded of us could get under his skin maybe more so then it would say mine or a member with far less technical knowledge then Luth.... even for me sometimes it's a frustrating thing to be confronted with a person that ask for help or advice then refuses to listen.....or after I've spent three months studying and working on a solution and actually finding it and then putting it to use in practice,,,,to share that kind of information with a person that ask you for it, because they're too lazy to find it for themselves,,,, only to be argued with or worse simply unappreciated after so many times I could see where it could make you very cynical.....

Mitch, I have more, than 1600 PMs in my box, and I delete 10-15 every day, after answering. 75% PMs are from noobs. Not even one PM was unanswered. I love to help people, if I see they're interested in watches, movements, etc. Again - not even one PM left unanswered.
What I don't like, is - noobs, who definitely would never contribute to this great forum, never will be a real members, who came just to grab the watch, and disappear. Thousands of such a "members". Most of elders sick and tired of "Who has the best XXX?" or "What dealer is the best for XXX watch?". From just one question we can see - it's a freeloader, came to grab the watch. I understand, we are "friendliest Forum on Earth", and many of our seasoned members are very polite, and want to please everyone. I'm not one of them. I'm a straight shooter, simple and plain. If somebody want a watch - let him read and learn. This way, maaaybe!!! will gain his interest to watches. Licking his ass and giving him all info he demands in the first post, is the way to lose potential member. He'll grab his watch, and will never come back. You decide, which way is better.

I consider myself a noob on this forum. My post count is next to none. That being said I have read and read as much as possible. I have used the advanced search option hundreds of times to look for specific information. Many times I get the answers and information I need but other times I run into more roadblocks. This site is full of SO MUCH information that at times it can be conflicting and leave me even more confused. So then the next option I have is to post a question myself . I am willing to admit that for some reason on this forum I tend to wimp out from doing that. The reason I don't always post is I come across a post with a title that leads me to believe someone is asking the question I want answered... I think great, I'm going to get the information I need. Only problem is the OP of that thread just gets blasted by some experienced people and the question never gets answered. The result is I shut the hell up and don't ask the question for fear of being blasted myself. I am not blaming anyone for this, just stating the way I feel. In fact, I would say that it is my issue and I have to learn to interject at appropriate times.

I will say that I am deeply indebted to the senior members who really make an effort to give the noob who posted a stupid question one chance. That even if they have answered the question a bunch of times, they take the time to explain themselves again. If the noob doesn't get it after that, I understand it is game on. I am a training officer in my job. I love it. I am willing to answer the dumbest, most retarded questions that any person could come up with. My only caveat is that the person better listen to the answer and not ask it again. So for those senior members who have the patience for the new guys and want to mentor us so we can move up to a level where we can share rather than ask, I say THANK YOU.

I was going to respond to Luth(who just made a great point that I haven't thought of before), but then I read the post by madtonic , and I don't think I will other then to say I believe this is a conversation we really need to have,,,,it may be long overdue.....Edit after Q's posting:
I think there's also a fundamental problem particularly in the Rolex section with new members posting and being adamant about misinformation. It causes so much confusion, when this happens in the Pam section there's a pretty quick response by Ale or one of the Pam Team to correct the post..... I also understand there's not nearly as many new members in the Pam section also so it's .... manageable.

Anyway because of the strong feelings on all sides of this issue this is a conversation worth having.......
