It seems 21J is too cheap / junky, and 3135 is overpriced and unnecessary. What is the best middel ground for my first watch? Should I go for a 2836 asian movement?

It seems a Rolex Datejust with 2836 is around $268. Is that a reasonable range?

Is BP or TW a better maker?

I would go for a A2836. It's new and after a service it's reliably, easy to repair (getting spares etc.) and a real workhorse!

Can't go wrong with a 2836. One of the most reliable reps out of the box. Benefits well from a good clean and a few gen ETA upgrades (I'll be posting a tutorial soon). Can be easily fixed if something goes south as parts are compatible. Good luck!
