First Post: Solid Gold Rolex Or AP?

Hi all. I’ve been lurking a while but this is my first post. I just want everyone’s opinion. I wish I could just do a poll… I’ve been corresponding with Alpha Modding (AMF) regarding getting me a Franken solid gold rep. I can’t decide between the Rolex 228238 (Day-Date, yellow gold, white dial with Roman numerals) or the AP Royal Oak 41 mm Rose Gold (15400OROO1220OR02). Both would be expensive, but it would be a solid 18k gold watch. Mods include:
Full solid 18k gold case set (bracelet, bezel , caseback , crown , case etc. ), custom dial , custom crystal , refinish of the watch for the most correct look and feel, pressure test to 6ATM, alignment work of all markers etc, polish of the hands to matching up well to good look , and clone movement inside the watch. I know I could buy a really nice stainless steel watch for the price, but I already have a gen Sub, gen datejust, gen Tag Heuer and gen Omega. I want a gold watch. Which one (between the Rolex and the AP) do you like better and why?

Hi and welcome to RWI! Glad you found your way here.

Hard decision. I think the Rolex is slightly more wearable, but that's a matter of taste and the ap is gorgeous, too. I'd go with a dark dial though. Another advantage of the Rolex is it gives you a bit more play to fit your wrist with the easylink, the AP is fix.
Why don't you buy stock reps and try them out first before investing in a costly modded watch?

Please take some time to read the sticky threads in the new members area (all subsections), learn the basic forum rules and get some very good advice in the process. A number of questions has already been answered there, this is just an example:

Another good thread to read to understand where RWI comes from and some fundamentals is this:

Most of the information you need to know to start is there. If you're preparing to buy, read the stickies before ordering. When you're finished, you can continue learning by reading the stickies in all remaining sections. If it's stickied, it's important information.

If you intend to sell, read the sales rules and all stickies in the sales section with particular care and make sure you understand each single rule. Sales rules infraction is taken very seriously here. As a new member you are not eligible to sell. Using the sales section is a privilege, eligibility must be earned, make sure you know and understand how.

For anything else, feel free to reach out to @eBoy or me, we're happy to assist, advise, direct, explain. Don't hesitate.

Thanks so much for the reply. I want a white or silver dial. My sub and Tag both have black dials. I find myself wearing white shirts with my suits lately. It’s just a clean look. As for the fit, I’ve tried on gen versions of both. Both have substantial weight due to the gold and they both look good on me (if I can say so myself). I guess I’m just stuck and I’m not buying both!

Don't discount how practical the easylink is. In summer, your wrist will get bigger and there's nothing more annoying than a tight bracelet.

I could always put a strap on the AP like my buddy did!

You could, but that's an offshore Chrono, much sportier. Would give it a more casual look for sure, but makes it totally different, too. Looks like you want the AP. Then go for it.

I was just playing devils advocate. I sincerely can’t decide. You make a great point on the Day-Date though. I really don’t think I can go wrong either way.

If you have some time, you still have the option to buy the stock reps, try them out for a while and make a more informed decision. At least that's what I'd do before such an investment.

Both are great looking! I can see how it would be a hard decision. Which one will appear more gem-like with the gold treatment? I'm not a gold person, so it's easy for me to say no as most don't appear genuine due to the color. I know that you are spending your coin on someone who will do a great job. Either one will look great, I'm sure. You appear to like Rolex, so adding a Presidential to the collection is a must. But, you don't have an AP, so there's that. I say flip a coin! Lol!

Curious, what was the range you were being quoted ? I'd personally (depending on price) go gen gold Zenith Omega GP etc stuff that could be had sub 25k depending on the cost of the build.

But interesting project. Personally I have a gen rose gold day date and IMO nothing beats that iconic design in solid gold.

This project is more or less 20k.

17k for a 40k and 65k watch respectively.

17k buys a decent amount of gen gold, totally personal preference. I'd bump it to 20ish and scoop a gold Zenith Chronomaster (which I happen to be eyeing myself LOL) but do keep the forum posted on progress
