hey babola dhk223 asked this question on davidsens thread, "How difficult is it to source the fat dagger shaped swanneck mvmt?
This would get it closer cosmetically to the gen, no?"
is the dagger more like the gen or is the spike ok?
thanks....
Mate...dagger or needle shaped regulator...I don't give a toss really. Why is that so important ? The only person you're trying to fool is yourself.
Ordinary Joe Blog wouldn't even know what Panerai is, let alone pick such a fine detail like reg shape
You will never be able to fool experienced Paneristi neither. The latest E-series Swiss ETA 6497 rep movement is still MILES away from the genuine, it only takes a quick glance at the movement for them to see it's a rep.
For me the most important thing in reps is the movement, if that's not right, your rep is worthless. It's all about getting the basics right in rep watches, all other bits - dial, hands, case, crystal can be sourced much easier than a good and proven movement.
All my reps are running on Swiss ETAs, the only few Asian ones I had in my possesion are long gone now. I kept one H-series Asian 6497 mov't in case I need some spares in the future, lot of parts and bits actually interchange between Swiss and Asian ETA.
Regulator needle on rep movements is something that's installed in mov't factory, not in the rep factory during the final watch assembly phase.
Shape and style of the reg needle is governed by the pure and simple economics and cost savings.
Standard Swiss ETA 6497 mov'ts come with pointe needle shaped regulator. Dagger-shaped regulator is simply one of the numerous decorative 'add-ons' and changes Panerai does to a standard Swiss ETA. For Asian rep makers to change a perfectly good and working reg needle on Swiss ETA 6497 is simply adding to the total mov't decoration process (bridges, swan-neck etc) and ultimately increasing the total production cost for a miniscule margin they normally make mass-producing these movement decorations.
To cut the long story short - stop sweating the small things, guys!
cheers,
