Finally.... someone asked, "Is that a Submariner?"

So I'm out on my morning walk and i'm sitting on a bench enjoying a fantastic view of the Noosa river mouth when a guy with his family starts a conversation with me and the missus. He's behind me and I've got my arm laying across the top of the bench back (wearing my VSF) whilst we chat, I've already clocked his Breitling, an old one but a Breitling non-the less. He is mid sentence and says out of the blue "Is that a Submariner?" I've always wondered how I would react when someone says that and it hasn't happened in all the years i've been wearing reps. Now I know the VSF is a good rep and I didn't want to get into any dialogue with him on the subject so I just said "Yes, yes it is" and that was that, we carried on the conversation, he said his good buys and that was that.

So, now I know. I've been waiting years for a very uneventful exchange! 🤣

Rep wearers sometimes have funny experiences. I am rarely addressed directly either, but I often get a kick out of the looks – especially from people I don't like. Just a few weeks ago, I had a meeting in which a young, snotty, asshole lawyer from an asshole law firm was present. He was wearing a Datejust and kept squinting at my arm out of the corner of his eye. Normally, I wear my watches discreetly. But with this idiot, I couldn't help it... that day I had my XF Jumbo Royal Oak on my arm ;-) His envious and sometimes angry glances... priceless! You could really see what was going through his mind. ‘Why him and not me?’

It's not everyday people are in the presence of the leader from North Korea and wouldn't dare want to address you directly. They are afraid of what might happen to them and their families. ;)

Technically correct is the best kind of correct mate.

He didn’t ask if it was gen. He didn’t ask if it was a rep.

It assuredly does meet the definition advanced.

I would have asked if it was the BEST submariner.

I would reply "It's a matter of personal taste, my Gold and Stainless 2 tone Bluesey is the best one in my opinion"

The last time I got "Told" was around 20+ years ago when some pissed up pikey looking moosh staggered towards me from the end of the bar in our local juicer and proclaimed "I used to sell them snides M8", twixt I barked the reply "fuck off and pester someone else"........

I knew he could not tell that at arms length in a dimly lit cosy listed building which was a thatched stone built cottage type pub / restaurant.
He did go forth and multiply.

Had he been a nicer more friendly type i'd have asked who imported them for him and possibly ripped the piss in a subtle way.

Conversely if this was obviously a sensible watch enthusiast type I'd have probably discussed watches over a pint with him and ended up selling him a watch as there was always an aluminium display case with somewhere around 16 popular Rolex and Breitling models in whichever car I was driving at the time :ROFLMAO:

We’ve only met once, but based on the data of that meet and interactions before and after, I want to assure the entire forum, that is exactly what @Dave2302 would have said to aforesaid moosh, delivered precisely how it has been explained here, in the same way that the explanation provided in writing here is exactly how it would be explained to you in person.

Should have told him about misaligned rehauts, floating m, and bezel misalignment.
Wait you mean people can’t instantly spot these themselves from a mile away. And don’t they all carry loupes on their person at all times for when they’re really up close to call you out?

All those watches I didn’t need to RL…

Idk about you but when I walk into collectors events I'm instantly attuned to the energy flow that the floating m on the dial gives away. Like a wolf smelling rabbits. I can sense it from 100 feet away. The watches smell nervous. They don't see me coming.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago.

I had to go to a funeral in a foreign city and after this sad event I walked aimlessly through the cold in the evening and eventually sat down in an Arabic restaurant. An older and a younger man were sitting at the next table. The younger one must have been in his 20s and was wearing a sub. I immediately thought it must be a replica. At some point, the older man approached me under a pretext and after a few sentences he asked me for my watch. It was a vintage Pepsi 6542. He had actually been at a watch fair in the city that day and was a connoisseur. We had a nice chat about different models and he showed me his Daytona.

I have no idea if his and his son's watch were real, but he was very enthusiastic about mine.

I've said this before, but I still think it's funny that the ONLY times I've been called out for wearing a "fake watch" was back in my 20s, when I had quite a few gen Rolex and Omega watches, and all my friends thought they were "fake."

Now I'm in my '50s, rarely wear gens (although I still have them) and no matter what I wear, it's barely noticed, other than a handful of my "watch snob" friends, who generally admire the model, but assume they're all real. That said, I don't generally sport $200,000 watches, most of what I wear is either vintage or stainless steel tool watches.

Whadda ya mean "floating M" this below is the first (and cheapest at £50) rep Sub I bought from a TD here when I first joined.

It gets the crap beaten outta it every day, it lives in a dirty dusty workshop, stays on my wrist all day, bashing things with hammers, gets covered in oil and grease, worn when welding etc ;)
It now runs a Miyota, keeps within 2 sec a day and I just took this pic about 10 mins ago ....

I see no floating M :p

I find it easier just to say they're fake, people will feel smug for being right or they'll always wonder. It can be handy to keep some people guessing. ;)
