Explorer Gilt Dial 6350 project - Help needed on NH35 movement

Hi everyone,

I need some help with my Explorer 6350 reference attempt, and the NH35 movement in particular. I’ll do a full write-up once it is complete, and the specs are below, but the immediate problem I have is – as you can probably tell from the pictures – that the NH35 stem appears way too long for the case.

The movement is supplied with 2 stems – a long and a short – I had assumed the shorter one was too short so started trimming the long one, then realised that I’d got it to about the length of the shorter one – so moved on to the shorter winding stem. However the shorter winding stem has got a max of about 2mm of screw left on which to attach the crown, and given there is easily another 5mm to go to get the crown to the tube, it is not going to fit.

As it is, the stem seems to be correctly fitted i.e. I can set the hands, I can wind it up etc. The NH35/36 movement was recommended by Raffles Dials as a movement which would fit the 36mm Explorer-style case, am I missing something here? Has anyone got any experience with the NH35 movement they can share which will help in this situation? E.g:

- Is the case just the wrong size for the movement or should it be OK with a 36mm case?
- Is there a well-known remedy I could try to either shorten the stem to the right length without compromising it?
- Or alternatively is there anything with the movement I can try which would fix it and allow the stem to enter further?

I’d picked the NH35 partly because I hadn’t worked with one before and they come recommended by those who have used them – but also because it is a low-beat movement and close enough for me to the Rolex original (in terms of how the second hand moves, at least). I know I could use a DG2813 as an alternative, though I’ve had mixed results in the past.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated. Specs as follows (so far):

- Case – ‘Vintage Explorer’ from Raffles Dials - £35
- Crystal – T21 bought from Leosics in UK a while back – £3
- ‘Syringe’ minute hand, hour hand – from Welwyn Watch Parts - £8.50 total
- Seconds hand from Cousins UK
- Crown – came with case. I have a “+” crown from Raffles Dials which fits the tube on the case but it is too thick/deep – it looks wrong, and is a lot chunkier than the gen crowns so looks odd on this watch
- Dial – an old dial blank (minus feet) which I’ve had kicking around for a while, the dial itself is a waterslide decal
- Movement – NH35 – about £35

1. Unscrew the stem from the crown
2. Cut the stem to the desired size (measure with caliper or trial and error)
3. Screw the cut stem back onto the crown
4. Enjoy

Thanks kilowattore. The problem is there is basically no thread left - about 2mm. Even if I get down to zero thread on the stem the crown still won’t be close to the tube.

Can I see crown and stem outside the case?

Did you used a stem extension ?
Here's a comparison pic

No I didn’t - just used what came in the NH35 kit. Presumably your pic is of a standard NH35 stem? If so, that explains a lot. Mine appears to have an extension tube added... I’ll see if I can somehow remove that. Thanks Manodeoro.

You're welcome
Stem extension should be easy to remove

Not as easy as I was hoping unfortunately but I’ve ordered a couple of new stems off eBay which look like they don’t have the extension in.

Nice build.

Please update us when the new stems arrive for comparison and how it fits.

Thanks for the link to the syringe hand. I've been looking for a source.

My 6350 says hi.

Thanks - and I love yours, I had read your posts re. your build and that was at least part of the inspiration for mine. My one is definitely at the budget end of the spectrum however, so a Vietnam dial was not an option for this build. I did wonder if there'd be a way of doing a home-made honeycomb dial...

I've used NH series movements in the Raffles explorer case a few times. As others have mentioned, the stem you received is weird. The standard fully threaded stem will work perfectly.

Additionally, if you dont want the ghost date position of the NH35 you can use an NH38. Its the same as the other Seiko NH movements, just without the day or date functions.

Just for reference, the NH35 is date only and NH36 is day+date

An added bonus with the NH movements in vintage builds is that they run at a lower beat rate than the usual ETAs or Miyotas. I dont think its quite as low as the vintage Rolex movements but it is noticeably lower than the 28800bph stuff.

I ordered nh36 from cousins and the stem that came with it was standard. I removed the daywheel. Nh35 was more expensive.
