Hi everyone,
I need some help with my Explorer 6350 reference attempt, and the NH35 movement in particular. I’ll do a full write-up once it is complete, and the specs are below, but the immediate problem I have is – as you can probably tell from the pictures – that the NH35 stem appears way too long for the case.
The movement is supplied with 2 stems – a long and a short – I had assumed the shorter one was too short so started trimming the long one, then realised that I’d got it to about the length of the shorter one – so moved on to the shorter winding stem. However the shorter winding stem has got a max of about 2mm of screw left on which to attach the crown, and given there is easily another 5mm to go to get the crown to the tube, it is not going to fit.
As it is, the stem seems to be correctly fitted i.e. I can set the hands, I can wind it up etc. The NH35/36 movement was recommended by Raffles Dials as a movement which would fit the 36mm Explorer-style case, am I missing something here? Has anyone got any experience with the NH35 movement they can share which will help in this situation? E.g:
- Is the case just the wrong size for the movement or should it be OK with a 36mm case?
- Is there a well-known remedy I could try to either shorten the stem to the right length without compromising it?
- Or alternatively is there anything with the movement I can try which would fix it and allow the stem to enter further?
I’d picked the NH35 partly because I hadn’t worked with one before and they come recommended by those who have used them – but also because it is a low-beat movement and close enough for me to the Rolex original (in terms of how the second hand moves, at least). I know I could use a DG2813 as an alternative, though I’ve had mixed results in the past.
Any help/advice greatly appreciated. Specs as follows (so far):
- Case – ‘Vintage Explorer’ from Raffles Dials - £35
- Crystal – T21 bought from Leosics in UK a while back – £3
- ‘Syringe’ minute hand, hour hand – from Welwyn Watch Parts - £8.50 total
- Seconds hand from Cousins UK
- Crown – came with case. I have a “+” crown from Raffles Dials which fits the tube on the case but it is too thick/deep – it looks wrong, and is a lot chunkier than the gen crowns so looks odd on this watch
- Dial – an old dial blank (minus feet) which I’ve had kicking around for a while, the dial itself is a waterslide decal
- Movement – NH35 – about £35
