I recently bought the 212470 Rolex Explorer I from a TD and noticed that the case width was 36 mm without the crown. Is it supposed to be 39mm? Sorry, rep watch noob here.

14270 and 114270 were 36. You have a 114270 there if it's 36.

That sure looks like the 39mm version. Where did you measure 36?
EDIT: I just measured my 214270, it measures 39mm from 10-4, and 41.78mm including the crown.
Yeah that cloth measuring tape is not the way to do it, you are not getting an accurate reading with that. You need a digital caliper.
But looking at that pic the watch is correct, 214270.
It's not random. He's started on the 100mm (10cm) mark because it's easier to hold a ruler or tape when there's an overhang on each side of the object you're measuring. It's much easier to align the start point, especially on the awkward circular shape of a watch . He's measured about 137mm there. Knock off the extra 100mm and you have a reasonable approximation given the kind of dressmaker's tape he's using.
Try it yourself and see.
