I’m planning to build a Datejust replica and wondering what movement to use ? I see that a Rolex clone movement can be had for around the same price as a genuine eta . What would be the advantage of using a Rolex clone movement in my watch ? If any ? I’m leaning toward using a genuine ETA , probably a 2824-2 , just assuming here as a newbie that they’re more reliable ? Also , same goes I suppose , if I used an eta clone , very cheap , it could be replaced at a later date with a genuine one . On the other hand , if a Rolex clone movement breaks it would be very expensive to replace with genuine Rolex , also kind of silly as you would still have a replica watch !!!
little confused and need to make a decision to move on , just looking for advice from experience ?

Go with the ETA movement. The watch will likely last longer. The advantage of clone Rolex movement is that you can set time/date same as gen.

Then there's the Seagull ST2130, the best clone of the ETA 2824-2 at a fraction of the price of the gen ETA 2824-2. Worth looking/researching into.

There are several advantages of a Rolex clone over an ETA or Sea Gull:
1. Dial fits the movement keeping the original dial feet. You need to clip those to secure the dial on an ETA thus destroying the value of the dial.
2. Date wheel sits properly (usually) and in the correct position so you don’t need an overlay to center it in the dial date window.
3. When Setting the time you rotate the crown and the hands move in the same direction on the Rolex clone as on the gen. They move in the opposite direction on an ETA. (The hands on the new 3235 move in the ETA direction.)
4. The cyclops on the gen crystal lines up perfectly with the date window on the dial for a gen movement, or one that replicates the gen position (TC, WM9, etc).

As members above have stated, there are pros and cons with using both movements. It also depends on which model of Datejust you would like to franken. For example, if you would like a 6 digit Datejust 36 I would just use an ARF Datejust 36 as I believe it's the best one out there. If it's a 5 digit datejust 36, it depends if you want a genuine case, if not ETA may be a better option as you can add genuine Tudor hands. Etc, etc. There are many factors to research before you complete your build.
