Could somebody more knowledgeable than me please have a look at the following Ebay listing for a genuine ETA Valjoux 7750 watch movement and comment please:

The seller appears to be legit from his feedback, but I just want to make sure that what he is selling is the real deal. Are the real Swiss movements engraved with serial number and therefore traceable? Should it arrive vacuum packed and fully oiled/serviced? Anything else to look out for when thinking about swapping out an Asian movement for a Swiss movement?

I bought an ETA 7750 from them last year and it was perfect. Brand new, Loose pack. I presume that it was lubed on assembly but i dont think that it is being sold as vacuum packed. If you're not EU, you will get hit for Tax.

There are no serial numbers, only the ETA stamp and calibre. The reppers haven't perfected these stamps (yet) so no need to worry. :)

The main visual cues between rep & ETA 7750 have now been replicated, such as rotor bearing, fine regulator, blue/non-blue screws etc. So you can only inspect the surface finish using a loupe. Compare the two and you will notice a difference!

The other tell is how "stiff" the stem feels on the ETA, compared to the looser stem on the rep.

oh and if you're using the day wheel - remeber to put the "washer" (supplied) on top, over the central hands posts. This will ensure that the day wheel turns positively without slippage. ;)

Thanks for the advice! I does look like a good deal to my untrained eyes, $350 for the working guts of a very expensive watch. I may even buy the movement before sourcing my first rep. ;)

Guru modified a Hublot with a gen movement. I understand that there were some issues with the hands.

For a7750 (28.8k vph) hands to fit the ETA 7750 (28.8 vph): you need to broach the large hour & minute hands and also the large chrono hand to fit the post. From memory, the hour & minute hands may *just* fit, but large chrono definately needs broaching.

The subdial hands tubes can be tweaked with tweezers to fit snugly onto the ETA.

If a watchsmith is doing the swap, then he/she would hopefully realise this before going any further with the installation.

Is it possible to DIY this without the use of too many costly specialist equipment or is it a professional watchsmith-only job?

Yes it's possible with a decent toolkit such as our own Watchbitz sells and a cpl of extras like a hand remover and broaches but it is not really a first time job. It's a bit of an expensive MVT to learn on. Watchmaking is one of those pursuits where one learns by his/her mistakes (check my sig for a classic example).
