DSN PAM089 Short Review

This watch is one of my favourites Automatic Luminor. It has all the functions which are useful to me, namely date, running second hand, hour, minute as well as settable 24 hour second time zone.

The story dates back about 2 years ago when the repmakers released this replica in Titanium. However, let's focus on this DSN version. DSN started providing manual wind historic Luminor series in Titanium (i.e.: 036 and 082) a long time ago and his venture to Automatic 7750 powered watch started much later. I don't have access to my old 089 so side by side comparisons are not provided.

So... let's get in terms of built quality. Out of box, it's really impressive. I have been a secret admirer of DSN Ti case. It has the feeling and appearance that it's made of really good materials and is very well machined. Edges are well defined, some are even beveled (not easy for Ti). All in all, no sharp edges on the watch at all including the crown.

It appears that DSN has improved the quality of lug screw as well as the thread on the case. It seems that the lug stripping problem won't occur on his Ti case.

Crystal is single sided AR coated and it's actually pretty good at reducing glare on the watch face (i.e: damn close to the real deal). Cyclop is really good too. Definitely very even and gives good magnification.

Excellent lume out of box but definitely application on the dial can be improved much further (see lume shot). Zig or Vac still have an edge here. It appears that even DSN uses handwork to apply the lume but very similar to my Comex dial, he follows the line very stricly. That's why under daylight, the dial will appear to have very even line/numbers... But when it's glowing, dead giveaway.

The printing on the dial is excellent and the colour looks to be really good too. Gotta love that grey tone.

CG and crown are good but definitely can be improved. The level is still loose and needs tightening like other PAM reps but it doesn't wobble in place (which is good). Definitely better than the one that I have on my PAM252.

Strap is Gunny's A009.

This will definitely get considerable wrist time. Big plus of Ti... very comfortable on the wrist. For the price of 300ish, this rep is worth the money spent. Considering the lume (this is a signature on every modern PAM watch... Superlume is a must).

The canon pin is actually correct on this model. It's a special kind of minute wheel with cap on it to cover the chrono second hand pole (this is a 7750 based movement).

The lume job is out of box. It came that way from davidsen. Ti is definitely not for the mass... Either you love it or you hate it  Most say it looks cheap and plasticky but to me, they are perfectly fine and definitely not plasticky at all.

Thx for the review takashi. I had been wondering what differences set his dial apart from the other makers. Looks like it is fairly standard except the L Swiss Made L is split by the GMT 12 label under the 6 o'clock position, a known variation on the gen. Really nice lume!

The TI 089 definitely has its fans but is not for everyone. Its dial is busier than the 6497 based watches, but IMO much "crisper" than the 063, or 029 GMTs which have a more classic look. I love this one for the same reasons, the functionality, the multitone anthracite dial effect, and the lightness. Its a substantial watch yet is easy to wear, sometimes you forget you have it on, its so light.

That strap actually looks perfect for that watch.

more thoughts and details on this piece.

Power reserve is very good and the movement looks to be working well. For sure it's not the standard off PAM089 from other dealers. The case is different, caseback and crystal too. This comes with thicker datefont too. Cyclop still can be further improved and so is the application of lume on the dial (needs to be consistent, obvious when it's glowing but not so under light).

The engraving on the caseback should be a bit deeper too... This one is crisp but looks almost like etched (not deep enough). Overall, it still maintain very good value for a rep of this quality.

Thanks for the pics and review Taka.

For me the 89 has that good appeal thanks to the anthracite dial (just like the 82 but in grey this time) plus the functionality of the date and 24H hand. One thing that is good to mention (apart from the ones you already mentioned) is that DSN improved a lot the size of the 24H hand compared to what other dealers offer.

I think if you like this piece, this is the way to go plus a lume job and cyclops swap/date wheel.

Cheers!

Nice review! Is the color of the face dial Anthracite (close to gen)? I was about to take the plunge when I noticed the dial face seems "too blueish" from DSN website.

Thanks for the awesome review takashi, you sure are the Titanium master.

I have a few questiosn before I purchase this 089 model as my first Pam.

Does DSN personally superlume his 089 making his price slightly more expensive?

Please tell me the major differences from most of the dealers now selling this "updated" 089 version. How are the hands, cyclops, fonts?

FYI, DSN sells his for $350 vs. Other dealers for $275. Is it worth paying the price difference?

great review! some stunning views and I can attest to their source as I have in hand a DSN PAM088, the SS cousin to the PAM089. The watch is impressive in hand and under examination, was even more so when I went down to the AD and compared with one in the window ... for all intents a mirror image of the model on display vs the one I was wearing. So as not to be off topic I will post some pix in a new thread ...

I too love the titanium cases and am presently wearing my 056 from Davidsen. Your excellent review is pointing me in that direction for my next purchase. What a beautiful watch.

How does one mod the cyclops? Is that something some of our local pros do?

Sorry for getting back so late everyone.

Cyclop and datefont is already very good :)

The lume is indeed C3 SuperLuminova. Asked Davidsan about it. Yes, like the gen, when setting the 24hr hand, it will jump in 1 hr increment.

thanks TAK, I am really surprised about the 24hr hand "hourly jump" behavior as I have been told that there aren't ANY GMT reps that have this feature (anymore). Is this ASIAN REP MOVEMENT very rare? This is what I am looking for as I really want the 24hr hand to behave like the gen. do you know of any other REPS out of the box that have the "jump" feature. thanks

Thanks very much for this great review Taka.. Can we do anything about the hour hand? Seem a bit out of proportion.

The hand sizes are actually correct on this rep (including the GMT hand tip).

Perhaps you are referring to GMT movement version of PAM63. In that case, it's based on modified 2836-2. In setting position, the GMT hand doesn't jump for this rep.

For all Asian 7750 with GMT based modification, the GMT hand will jump. So it's not a rare movement.

The jumping GMT hand refers to when setting the hand in 24 hour scale. If you have PAM063 with ETA2893-2 movement, then it is like the gen (jumping GMT hand in setting position).

The rep also has short lume area for hour hand :) You can't swap it with PAM252/092/186 as they have different hand size (smaller).
