DSN 003 A - How accurate?

Hi,

Overall the DSN 003 A looks great, however, its lume looks "bright yellow (almost orange)" compared to the gen's "light yellow" color.

Now, the gen 003 (A Series) is an old watch (1998): was its Tritium lume bright yellow/orange when it was brand new and it has faded to a light yellow throughout the years? Tritium fades in time, no?

Is it perhaps the lighting in the pictures or is the DSN just too bright and basically wrong?

What do you think?

(First picture is the DSN, the others are of two different gens that I found.)

There is no hard a fast rule in regard to the T lume patina..it can be affected by its enviroinment...

You can see some that go an orange or rather burnt patina...others can creamify and others look like they did... same goes with the charged look

Unlike the non matching lume of the early PreV models (of which there were only a certain range that were) which was caused by a reaction of the varnish on the T lume

In the case of any Cartier/early Vendome models with T lume you could not definitively say what is and isnt right... (within reason ;) )

Thanks for the replies.

I have a feeling that if a Panerai expert looked at a DSN 003 A they would think the lume is way too bright. Not that I would be showing it off to an AD..

Could it be the lighting in DSN's pics that make the lume seem so bright? Probably not.

I wouldnt disagree mate...I must admit any of Davids lume on anything he makes in that era would attract my attention.. but I have seen the odd safe queen that managed a very good lume charge...

However given the rest of the watch I wouldnt worry to much as anyone that would know that would spot the rest of it... ;)

The thing is mate... that anyone can pull any rep or franken to bits on forums and it always seems like there are a lot of guys that know...

But in the real world the chnces of you bumping into someone like that and getting into a chat about whats on your wrist is unlikely... highly unlikely...

And I knwo when I spot one I never say anything anyway... nor do most guys if they do...just read on the gen forums of guys that spot reps...they mention it on the forums but rarely in person...

If you then read guys that get called out it is usually by a over bearing twat with ego issues looking to show off... who wouldnt know a gen if you beat him with it..

So when you factor all that in to actually buying and wearing one then I would say dont get so caught up with the anal PAM heads on here (they are a very very small minority) and if you like it buy it...

I would have no problem wearing any of Davids watches out and about if I was so minded... and I would have no problem discussing that watch with any Risti... I have never worn a rep to be a gen..I have gens... though I would take it to a GTG I wouldnt wear it..;) But it is interesting to see just what most Ristis actually know !! :) and its much less than you think in truth.. :)

So if you like it buy it..wear it in good health and enjoy it for what it is ..a great rep of a great gen...

One more question. How could I get the lume on the DSN 003 A to look more like the gen (light yellow)? Only by re-luming I guess?

I understand the DSN 003 has tritium lume - is it common for the forum pros who do re-lumes to use tritium if I wanted? Just curious.

Sorry for the noob questions!

Great reply Pete, you are absolutely correct about most gen owners. Most have no idea between rep and gen and most just don't care about it. You stand a better chance of being called out by a rep owner than by a gen owner. If you look around you'd be surprised how many people are wearing reps from all walks of life.
