If you were going to buy one today, whose would you get AND what mods would you have done to it?

Mr. Davidsen!

Have a 217 inbound...

Different model but same specs:

SuperL hands and dial
Swiss swan-neck
Great CG
Superb AR.
High canonPin fixed.

Cant think of anyone offering that as an entire package! :)

No other mods needed..

Dream Fiddy ! :) :) :)

Unfortunatelly there's no such thing (bar the gen, of course) 8)

Check some recent posts re 127 rep on TRC...plenty of info there.

The concensus curently is a toss up between DSNs and ELs latest "the bestest of the bestest"

Super lume, good quality sapphire and a reliable Swiss 6497 'E series' movement seem to be the main differentiators in Fiddy purchase decision making - at the moment, anyway.

- the case has been close to 1:1 for some time now amongst most of reputable dealers (assuming you get the "correct one - e0117 and not the e0581)

- crown guard is now 1:1 and although some dealers still make claims like "new, updated, superthick CG"...don't believe the hype, it's been like that for over 3 mths now. The CG on gen isn't supposed to be thick anyway!

- '1950' dial text is correct font now, dial text color is now much closer to gen's off-white, instead of being cream/yellow

- watch for the second-hand subdial @ 9 o'clock, some dials come with the correct size, some with smaller subdial. The tip of a second hand should touch the tips of the subdial, both painted ones and cutouts. Some dials come with smaller cutouts which look almost a circle holes.

etc...drop me a PM if you need more info, happy to reply. I've acquired 3 Fiddys in the last 6 months, one sold, one currently @ DSN (davidsen) for a spa treatment :)

hope this helps a bit,
babola

Seems like you're more suited to buying Gens.

Know u know the differences and mayb good for them to try replicate better but all in all i see your posts are being too harsh to the point of being demanding.

Au contraire my friend, au contraire...

Some of us take this stuff more seriously than others...call me "anal" but that's me, this is my hobby and not obsession, however - a serious one 8)

It doesn't help having a design degree on a side either, and a good eye for detail, eh ? :)

Glad I could help...
stay well,

I would have to agree with Rocky here. There's been too much bullshite about dealers 'Claiming' that their fiddys are the 'Holy Grail - 1:1 exact piece'. Frankly, it's all been the same. No matter what they write in their emails or dealers' post, the crown guard is too thick, the case size is way too big as well, as it measures more than 47mm. A recent comparison with EL's 'bestest' copy proved nothing like what he has mentioned. Although some recent developments have followed - dial and font size and color, i would still say it's 70%.

@Pamfried - Balboa was just sharing his knowledge and experience as WE are the same people who rush and buy every new modified version, find out that it's not what it appears and ends up selling em. If you would have to be sarcastic, i would rather you try that with EL or any dealer you know who add credence to his post about their EXACT 1:1 copies.

Thanks for the kind words K_W,
unfortunatelly my name's got nothing to do with the great Rocky Balboa...my handle is slightly different - 'babola', a name that got stuck from my childhood when it used to be my nickname :D ...hard to get rid off some old stuff sometimes... 8)

stay well,

You may have to get used to that. Everyone still thinks my name is Rodeo. :D

I'd love to see some pics of a real next to a gen. Or if anyone has a real and gen, if they can comment on it. Problem is, the real one was a limited edition and prices now are about $10k for a gen.

This is not a sales thread and I don't want to hijack it and turn it into one, so if a mod wants to split this off or delete it I understand. I was just posting the pic to show the improvements that have been made that address many of babola's "checklist".

The dial improvements, along with the movement bridges and the correct dagger/sword (whatever you want to call it) swan neck are the most noticeable improvements. The seconds subdial on this pic is actually a bad one, but a customer just ordered one and the actual subdial on that watch was better (the cutouts look more like lines than the more circular ones in this pic) Also the AR on the crystal is good and the lume is fantastic right out of the box...it still needs a cannon pin fix... hope nobody is upset about this...as I said, feel free to move it or delete it.

I am sure nobody is upset about it belial2k. How much is it though? And the most sensitive issue: Does your version addressed the "exploding crystal" issue? I really want my next Fiddy with a real sapphire crystal.

I'm staying out of the whole sapphire debate. My supplier list it as sapphire, which is really synthetic sapphire, not mineral glass. I hope that is clear enough. I can't answer the exploding crystal issue, its too new but nobody has told me about one exploding yet (and I'm sure I would have been told if it happened). I don't know if anyone has gone flying in one yet, either. I guess that is where my warranty would come into effect if it failed :D . I have it listed in my panerai preorder section, so if you are interested please PM me. So now I guess all dealers should post their Fiddys here to get equal time....

I have a Davidsens current offering of the 217, & on the wrist it`s spot on. Great Ar sapphire, 117 # case, superlume, and no cannon fix.
Movement is Cn, keeps great time. It looks 98% and very happy with it from the box.
