Sounds like there are a lot of docs, residents, or med students in here.

(and a lot of other smart people from other highly technical backgrounds too, I should mention).

One of the med students has even become a dealer ;) (Don't know how he managed to do that with all the spare time. Must have gone into dermatology or something) Many have declared themselves as physicians... I suspect many others are going "stealth" or lurking...

Wondering what prompts people who probably could afford a few gens to do this...

what dealer is a med student?

I believe Juergen misspoke. The one I am thinking of is already a medical doctor, TTBOMK.

I was a medical student, once, but left it in my 2nd year due to family health problems. I'll go back eventually.

Because it is more fun to own 10 replicas than one gen.. That is why I would do it.. to bad the pay here sucks and I am poor as hell! :?

When I started practice, most of my money went to my partners. Now that I have become a partner, a lot of my money is going to my partners for the buy in. I started buying reps b/c I like having a large variety. I could have purchased a single gen for what I've spent on my reps. I do have the money now to buy a gen. I hesitate, b/c if I buy an expensive gen, I'm going to want to wear it all the time to justify it's purchase. Then all the time I've spent obsessing on picking the right reps, the time spent getting the flaws fixed, and the money spent on mods is going to be wasted.

Maybe MDs have more time to admire each other's watches? LOL *JK!*

Don't forget other common professions too, e.g. entrepreneurs. Tend to think towards impression onto potential business partners to catch the deals.

I am a doctor. I love the variety too (Rolex, Cartier, Panerai, IWC, AP). The reps are so good that they fool everyone I work with. They all just assume that my watches are genuine. My wife is a doctor as well, and she also only wears decent quality reps. No one even questions her on her watches (Patek, Cartiers and FM.) I have been buying reps for years (since residency, when I couldn't afford a nice genuine watch), and now that I can I still go back to the same rep dealers. I have introduced a handful of my good doctor friends (who make much more money than I do) to the world of the reps, and they are now among our community and buying up high quality reps. Money is money...no matter how much you make.

Not a doctor yet . . . but I come from a very very well off, semi-political family and purchasing gens would not be a problem, although I have a fixed income from which I have the pleasure of financing my hobbies and I would rather buy 10+ reps for the price of one gen. Reps have the added benefit of not being petrified of scratching them any number of abrasive surfaces lining the interior and exterior of my house and establishments that I frequent.

I am constantly surrounded by wanna-be watch enthusiasts and I am yet to have anyone question the authenticity of my reps given my periphery circumstances. I encounter on a routine basis neighbors and family members (dysfunctional family much) with genuine B&R chronos, Hublots, and PAMs complimenting me on my reps without a hint of skepticism. Not to toot my own horn, but I have extensive training and familiarity with detecting lies and I would have instantly noticed if these individuals were testing me in the form of a compliment :)

Add another medical student here. Just started my 3rd year so still a while to go before I can call myself an MD and even more time after that (don't make much during Residency) before I start making a little bit of $. Even then, I prob will stick with reps if they're available because I don't see the value in buying a gen if a rep is 95%+ accurate. I'd want too many watches in any case.

Regarding TWP being an MD, I never got the impression that he is/was. Even reading that linked thread where he says "Percentage of women in last years University of Kansas School of Medicine 1st year class=54%." doesn't indicate that he is; just that he's aware of the stats (and is possibly linked to the school somehow). I can quote the percentage of student lawyers, nurses, etc. but that doesn't make me one.

Nothing against TWP, by the way. He may very well be a doc (cause I have seen tons of them on the rep boards). I'm just saying that I never got the idea that he is one.

TWP is a surgery room photographer and med student I believe. Not yet a doc. TWP you can correct me if I'm wrong.

No, Not a photographer, he does the dirty work.

He assists in surgery, I guess you could call it.. The Begining and The End (with some in between).

Interesting! Where/how did you get the training to detect lies? And what is usually a solid "tell" that someone is not being truthful? This is more interesting than the Dr. topic (to me, anyway).

Oh, I am not a Dr. I work at a very large software company.

Hey guys. I'm a psych doc and work in public health care. I don't make a lot of money but even it I did I wouldn't spend $3,000 on a gdamn watch. I have two of my own kids and 3 adopted kids. I'm not spending that kind of capital. However, people usually do not question me because I'm a doc.

Though I am not a doctor, I have several other credentials and various letters which I could obnoxiously place after my name. I am, conservatively speaking, a man of wealth and taste...a man of leisure, some would say.

I am into the counterfeit watch trade because I have a certain amount of slime ball in me. I like to get away with things. I'm just insecure enough to want to show people that I can't just afford a few nice watches, but a huge amount of nice watches....several gens included.

And there is also a comraderie in the rep world, which is cool and leads to interesting fellowships.

efnstefn--

well put... There is a thrill no doubt. And we're all pretty honest about our motives, which includes getting away with something.

Also I think there are lots of people of means on this board who have a bit more common sense and frugality than to plunk $3k and up on a silly swiss watch, even if it doesn't wreck the budget or come close.

of course common sense and money don't always go together.

im an orthopod, resident that is. but yes i am a doctor.
i dont make much at all but even when i do, i dunno if i would buy only gens.
my dad is an orthopod and could afford whatever he want but i got him a TT roly sub and he loves it, and the 6800 dollar saving,
plus he is always leaving stuff in the OR or wherever so a gen would not be a good idea for him
