Disappointment

Well I wore my Toro supplied Black Bay V5 for the first time today. Felt good. I looked in the window of an AD to compare it too a gen and was pleasantly surprised. A few hours later a screw fell out of the bracelet and disappointment hit me. I have only had it a couple of weeks makes me think would this happen to a Steinhart or a Seiko?

Didn't you tighten the screws after receiving the watch? Or is the screw defective?

No I didn't tighten the screws in hindsight I should have done. I suppose I was naive thinking it was factory fresh! Worried about cross threading the screw now (have to buy a screwdriver first though).

As long as the watch itself is okay everything is fine :adoration:

From time to time this happens... Obviously rep watches don't go thru the same QC as a gen, even a Seiko or cheaper name brand. It's good practice to do a once over on your watches when you receive them.
WD bath
Soap bath (if water resistant)
Tighten down all screws
and test everything out to make sure everything is in proper working order

I'm sure you can get toro to send you out the missing screw you just have to show him which one is missing.

I wouldnt blame a rep for a screw falling out. I've had gens with loose screws. It's just something to check occasionally. It's actually good to look over your watch every now and then just to make sure everything is good to go.

My experience showed that the factorys dont tighten screws, so always do that by your own[emoji56]

Thanks for the friendly advice everyone. Is there anything I have to watch out for when trying to refit the screw?

Luckily I was in the car when it happened so the watch is for fine but it could have been worse!

I had the same happen with my v5, luckily the screw was in my jacket. Has anybody found a way to preemptively keep the pip from coming out, I think this is common on these.

do not buy cheap screwdrivers. Invest in a few swiss screwdrivers, it makes a big difference. Drivers that don't fit properly will end up damaging your screws and/or your watch. I also suggest you order some loctite. I tiny dab of loctite in the female end of bracelet will ensure the screw does not back out on you.

Personally as soon as I get a new watch I remove the bracelet and clean it in the ultrasonic. I remove all the screws and clean it again with the screws and links in pieces. If any screws are giving you a hard time heat them up with a steamer or a hairdryer. Let it dry and reassemble it with loctite. That way you know it's good to go.

check out my ultrasonic thread for more details

I got two new watches in today. One is a cartier ballon bleu for my wife. I removed her bracelet and cleaned it in the ultrasonic, after ten minutes two of the screws had fallen out and five more were backing out. The other watch was a panerai 005, i looked down and the screw was backing out on my lug. This is why you should clean your bracelets, check the screws, and use loctite if needed

Yup agreed, in fact I used to even take it for a service after receiving them, check the screws, and do NOT assume they are waterproof even if it says so on the site.

Feel a bit worried about using locktite in case I cause some damage. Looked it up on line and it seems difficult to remove once applied.

Not true at all. Try and get loctite 222, it's the weakest, but it's hard to find in my experience. I have loctite 242/243, which is medium. Do not use anything stronger than 242.

Either of those two are weak enough that you can break the bond with mechanical force and should not require heat. If you want to make it easier you can steam the bracelet or heat it with a hairdryer first.

The majority of the stories you read online about people having a hard time with bracelet screws us caused by poor skills or the wrong tools.

The key with loctite is to use the tiniest amount. Use it on the female end not the male end.

Rolex and other brands use loctite or similar on their bracelets .

After 14 years of collecting res, and having a 6.5" wrist I have found:

Either the bracelet screws are way loose (tighten and use blue Loctite)

or

The screws are maddeningly tight, apparently have some type of clear lacquer applied over them so they don't back out.

Well I bought a screwdriver set and some locktite 222 so hopefully everything will be ok now. I suppose I over reacted a bit but it's because I am new to the rep world. Thanks to everyone who helped me I appreciate it.
