Hello fellows,

So, I got me a Pam 029M series, it comes "stock" with an Asian 2836-2 (GMT module) so I have 3 questions if anyone knows an is companiable enough to comment and help me out,

1) After reading for some time online I found the main difference between ETA (or chinese clone) 2836 and 2836-2 is the added GMT module on the later... but what about the ETA 2893-2 which also has a GMT module? is it that the 2836-2 has a 12 hour GMT and the 2893-2 has a 24 hour GMT?

2) So my Pam 029M from Noob as I said comes with the A2836-2 with a GMT function, I learnt the gen Pam 029M comes with the swiss ETA 2893-2 GMT non in-house movement, so after more reading I found some folks here and on RG are modding their GMT rep watches with swiss ETA 2893-2 to be more "per-gen".

is there any function-wise or reliability improvement over the Asian 2836-2 if one swaps for a swiss ETA 2983-2 24 hour GMT movement -I mean beyond the actual better quality of a new ETA movement over a chinese clone movement-

3) If I were to decide to have my local WS swap the asian 2836-2 with a gen ETA 2893-2 movement apart from the movement what would I need? I have read online one needs an ETA "overhaul" or fitment kit, were could I find this to have it ordered?

thank you very much for reading, your help will be appreciated.

The asian 2836-2 that is used in gmt watches is modified to do so, same as the 7750 models that have been modified as such.
The 2893-2 is the only dedicated 28xx-series movement from eta, and it is a more advanced movement than the 2824 or 2836.
You can swap them without issues, note that the stem is different between them.
Hope that answers some questions

No they are entirely different, no parts exchangability. A decent watchmaker should be able to swap the movements out.

A genuine ETA 2893-2 is going to be light years ahead of a Chinese clone and in my opinion better than an ETA 2836 with GMT. They aren't exactly the same dimensions. The 2893-2 has a very slightly different stem height and a very slightly larger pillar plate diameter. It's also about 1mm thinner which shouldn't be an issue. I've not tried swapping these for anybody yet.

Thank you for your valuable insight.

I have read online that ETA doesn't actually make a 2836-2 with native GMT module, these are made by Chinese Watch making companies that add the module on top of an already made Asian clone of the ETA 2836-2.

That is, Swiss ETA 2836-2 is better than ETA 2836-1 but doesn't have a GMT module

There were some genuine ETA 2836 movements fitted with a GMT function but now that you mention it that might have been done by an aftermarket company. I just can't remember at the moment. Google might tell us.

So about its usage, are both GMT functions supposed to be used the same way ? IOW did the A2836-2 with a GMT module manage to perfectly replicate the GMT function , usage , setting and movement from the ETA 2893? Are both 24 hours for example ? Are both set the same ? Is the sweeping of the GMT hand the same ?
