Difference between rep bracelets & gen?

Reading the FAQs on Panerai from Timezone, it states that on 44mm cases,
the strap models cannot simply accept a bracelet.

Why? The explanation wasn't very detailed...

I know with gens the cases made for bracelets have small grooves in them to receive the shoulders of the bracelet.

So watches not made for the bracelets will get scratches if you fit a bracelet, you can get the bracelet on but its difficult and damages the case.

I did it once using a bracelet off a 250 then AD explained so I didnt do it again.

Thats only the gens not the reps.
