This is a common dive preference and it could be both opinions are correct as they both have valid applications. PANERAI was a military dive watch and other diver's watches like SINN sell DESTRO models for the application of wearing them 'inside' arm on the left.

Either useage is fine and a good story behind why your watch is "backwards" when chatted up by the ladies.

Yes, I've dived for 25+ years and have met military divers up in PNG / Perth. They expressed a preference for (1) robust, (2) functional and that included having a clean design so as not to catch - which would be consistent with the 'inside' CG for righties.
Though, I don't recall these blokes having PAMs (but it's a long time ago and PAMs weren't as prevalent in the late 70s ...)
