You've just been put in charge of design at Panerai...
What do you do... go old school design with new tech?
Bring out more 44mm Betti's? Maybe reinvent the Pre-Vs, Pre-As?
Go Large with the 47mm Subs and EGIs?
Sleek Rads?
Or... I won't hold it against you... release more crap like their Brabus range?

Great question and topic @jonnybaws

First order of business would be to fire the designer in charge of the Brabus turd. Perhaps they already were and that's why I now have the job...

Next I would add a 44mm bronzo sub to the range (full bronze bezel also), which has been a serious omission IMO - perhaps with a similar dial to the 1070.

I would also use the 670 case set to create a few new simple models with no date and clean dials. The brushed / polished titanium case is so versatile with colours and comfortable to wear it shouldn't be confined to one model.

We need new Bettarini models! Perhaps a Betti bronzo, forged carbon, new PVD styles with pre-v essence?

Agreed @Woundup back to Basics for me..
44mm Betti Subs like the 064/087
Ti re-edition of the 243 with a Hobnail dial?
100% a 44mm Bronzo
More Tux and Hobnail dials..
Offer some less radio active T Dials :-D

Ok, interesting...time to show us some Photoshop rendering or 3D Blender stuff....
I would go for a thinner 45mm submersible, integrated strap, no lugs, orange dial and slim crown guard.
With interchangeable bezels of course-

I also want a return to the 187/194/285 style bezels, something you can grab with 5 gloves on!

A sizedown of these will be great [i don't have thick wrists like you guys do]
- 44mm varient of 382
- 44mm fiddy
- 44mm rads
- 42mm 243s and bettarini subs
- 42mm quarantaquattro subs

Or a destro 243T with Ti/FC case :)

Or a 222 dial + PVD/Ti case + Tritium dial, for some reason I have a soft spot for dials with circle indices

Interesting post Jonny

If I’m head of design I would be looking backwards and not forwards! I would rediscover the PAM DNA and why so many love and fell in with the brand and design.

I would put emphasis on simplicity
I would urge clean lines
I would center on 44

I would scrap date window, Brabus and techno lights !

I would design cooler straps to capitalize on the strap marked !

@johnlogan - I was also thinking about straps earlier and how disappointing many/most of the OEM are. Quality also seems to be hit or miss - I have had several Panerai straps that have developed issues with separating edges, stitching etc.

I would certainly overhaul the strap department and immediately ban straps that taper from 26mm at the lugs to 22mm at the buckle/clasp.

There's no reason why modern Panerai shouldn't be accompanied by beautiful and robust straps as they were in the pre-v days. Sewn in buckles - sure!

I'd also establish collaborations with some of the best aftermarket strap makers - perhaps to create 'special editions' of certain references. Not to limit the number or references produced, though to create a limited number of the references with a particular strap collaborator. Think of it as a similar concept to the release of the boutique 44mm Luminors that had different casebacks representing the city of the boutique's location.

Think we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet, back to basic, classic design using some newer materials stop making over complicated/busy Pams.. better price point and more aftermarket options.. I’d bet most collectors would agree, if you ever see their GTG pics most are showing wristies of older models.. that’s their audience, that’s who they should be aiming to cater for not Hublot wearing Premier League footballers!!!
