Black (dlc or pvd) will show all scratches easily. Personally I'd go with a brushed steel.

Brushed steel would be great, I concur. If you do go the black route, the ceramic models are the only way to go (I am a huge fan of the 438). I have done the DLCs and PVDs, and they scratch way too easily for me when I was 30. I could only imagine as an 18 year old... :)

Another one of those "I can't be bothered to make the effort to even read the guide" type of threads. Seem to be a lot of those lately. Not sure if by answering, we are perpetuating the cycle. Oh well, PVD/DLC, PAM026/PAM599/PAM785(PVD)/PAM786(PVD). All manual winds (A6497). I would not recommend an automatic if your 18-year old is the rough and tumble kind of kid.

Movement advice, A6497 is a different animal from A23J/A7750 since the former is a manual wind and the latter are automatics. Which is better among the two types? Both or neither because you can only have a manual wind movement on manual wind PAMs and autos on automatic PAMs, they are not interchangeable. Now for the A23J (or Seagull/Lite) vs A7750, it's a toss up. Some prefer one over the other. I have PAMs with both and don't mind getting the A23J version if it's cheaper, or the A7750 version if that's the only one available.

While I can't recommend one movement over the other, I gotta ask you this: are you sure your son will be fine with manually winding his watch almost every day? 6497 is an old school manually wound engine, 7750 is automatic.
Most teenagers, like moí back in the days, find even auto mechanical watches a pain in the ass to deal with. The #1 reason I opted for a quartz Tag instead of a mechanical one back in 03.
Might be something you'd like to consider first, just to be sure.

Not to be rude but i spent a week or more just reading and using the search bar to answer any questions. You will learn a lot that way. Sometimes things get too close to call with what specific rep to pick out due to a few issues like better sapphire or which one has the better dial etc... Try searching you won't be disappointed. Cheers

I too would like to help out but this only seems to encourage this type of questions that have overtook most of the forum these days.

For what it's worth, unless you are heavily loaded and your 18 yo is expected to have a min $4K worth of watch, you will only make him more likely to be called out to wear a rep. I mean if I saw a 18 yo rocking a 292 (unless he is on the cover of a magazine or tv...etc), that's what I would first think.

Just a side note on scratches.
Every material will scratch if you beat the watch strong enough, except ceramic. In that case ceramic will crack and you will have to throw away the watch.
Steel, titanium, DLC are all good options for a daily wear as long as you choose a good quality rep.
Panerai is a rough watch, a few scratches won't ruin its look.

Nah not necessarily. The general public aren't like RWI members, those who don't follow fashion rarely know what a panerai is.

Based on firsthand experience in college, I assure you most people won't even notice what the kid's wearing unless you're part of a frat community. Those who notice are less likely to respond unless the kid's wearing a rolex or tag heuer. The majority of the final group will usually call out the kids "privileged brats riding college on daddy's money"

Remove all of the above from the flock, then you have the very tiny minority who will call out anyone, kid or adult, a rep owner.

Ceramic. 438 or 441. Won't scratch. Just don't drop it.

Depends if you give a sh!t or not about being called out. I like wearing nice watches. I couldn't care lees if someone called my watch a rep. I just hope they don't call out my pec, bicep and butt implants.

A $300 seiko, orient, tissot, Hamilton, Edox...etc are far nicer and superior watches than our reps (in terms of longevity, material quality, movement, qa/qc, and support)....I think we all know that. I'm not trying to argue so don't get me wrong but other than imitating the looks of a beautiful watch that we all like, reps aren't all that "nice" of watches with their crappy straps, hit or miss dirty movements, more often than not wobbly bezels and foggy crystals...of course there are some super reps out there that I certainly adore but I still accept them with their potential flaws and issues which inherently come with by being a rep.

I wish I could say the same about being called out, I (personally) do give a shit and really wouldn't want to be called out by anyone.

I have to agree to disagree. I don't think seiko, orient or tissot are far nicer at all. They generally do have cleaner movements though I guess. I tried to buy a seiko but other than the tuna can, they don't make anything I like. My wife has had more trouble with her Longines than I've had with all my reps put together so I'm happy with them and know I can always get them cleaned and serviced if I need to. And if QC isn't quite there I wait for a suitable update or QC hard and none of my watches have crooked bits outside of reasonable tolerance.

I buy my reps because they're beautiful looking watches, not because they're reps of expensive watches and I'm trying to impress anybody (I work from home and my dogs don't judge me). Each to their own though. If I worked around a lot of high end gens, I might alter my tune a bit. You have every right to your own opinions, of course. Don't take me the wrong way, I'm simply explaining MY attitude towards reps. If you don't want to be called out, that's fair enough.
