Hey there fellas

I'm from Switzerland and therefor it's kinda difficult to order watches. That's why I'm going to build my own watch.

I'm having a problem though. I have bought the following parts so far:

  • Part - Type - Source
  • Dial/hands - Replica branded PAM - eBay
  • Case w/ sapphire - Aftermarket unbranded - GETAT
  • Movement - Genuine ETA 6497 - Swiss auction platform
  • Crown - Aftermarket unbranded - eBay
  • Crownguard - Aftermarket unbranded - eBay
  • Caseback - Replica branded PAM - eBay
  • Strap - Genuine PAM rubber - eBay
  • Strap buckle - Replica branded PAM - RWI

But I'm having a problem right a the beginning. the dial is too small

The seller on ebay said it was a 35.5mm dial which would be perfect for the case. Unfortunately the dial is only 34mm in diameter which is too small for the case and it looks silly and doesn't sit well in the case. the dial has about a 1mm gap around it. Besides that the dial and hands look good to me but the lume is crap. But lume is not an issue for me. Other listings on ebay with the same dial all state that it's 34.5mm..

What's the correct diameter for a 005 dial and what can I do to make it fit? If I should buy another case then please show me which one. It doensn't even have to be with a PAM caseback because I already have one. Aftermarket "Marina Militare" cases are just fine for me.

This is the dial:

I'll post a picture of the dial on the movement and in the casing when I get back from work.

Thank you for your support!!

Edit: According to paneraisource the dial I have should not be too far off regarding the printing.

But I'm not going for a 100% correct replica. I just want a nice PAM that I built myself and that I feel comfortable while wearing :cheese:

Do you really have trouble with an import package from China in your country? Here, we import everything from China....

We do import a lot from china and watchparts usually go through without issues but you cannot import whole watches. They get pulled most of the times because we have very strict customs. They even x-ray most packages and if there's a watch inside they open the package.

34.5 mm dials fit into Getat 44mm luminor cases just fine. take a picture of the dial installed into the case. if this is a RAD case, then no it will be too small.

There are much better recipes for this build that can be had more cheaply if you are patient. I would join the VIP section at repgeek. There are TONS of watch builders there always selling extra parts. for the 005, I would stick to H-factory or the most recent version of Noob for all components.

Ideally you will want this:
Noob case and CG
H factory crown
H factory dial or most recent version of Noob.
Noob or H factory hands
Noob case back

As far as the dial you purchased...I could be wrong but I believe 34.5mm is the proper size for the dial. I will have to measure one when I get home.

I respect that you want to build your own watch! Of my 6 watches I have built 5! Trust me there are better, high quality parts that are available on these forums that don't involve ordering from China or eBay.

Thank you for your replies.

I know now that I could have gotten better parts if I were more patient but that's me. I didn't do enough research and when I saw these dials on ebay I just rushed.

I'm happy on one hand though because I learned a LOT since I started this build. I even messed up an A6497 while trying to remove the second hand pinion for the currently installed dial and then I took the whole movement apart, fixed the gear alignment and put it back together and I works again. This is a highligt for me because everytime I tried to fix a watch before it was worse after than it was before

anyways, here are two pictures of the dials and my currently available MM case. It's not the one I ordered because I put this order on hold since this would not fit. But see for yourself:

It's hard to capture because it's not even a whole millimeter but there is definitely a gap. I tried it with the other dial since I want to use the 005 dial for my final build. The hands don't match the lume but that's not an issue since it's just a pre-test build. I got the correct hands for the 005 dial. Is that gap normal? Both dials are 34.5mm.

In the meantime I'll look for parts and if I find a better case I'm going for it.

Customs is not the only reason for me to build this watch. It's about building a watch from "scratch" and to learn in this process. If it turns out great then I won't be mad of course

thats a fiddy case... (1950 case size) they take 35.5 to 36.4 mm dials. for models like 312, 320, 351

If you get a Getat 44mm Luminor case it will fit the dial you bought.

Now I see the difference in the caseback design.

Will this fit until I get the proper rep case? I also need one for the currently installed dial

Yes exactly what you need for the smaller dial. it comes in Polished, brushed Stainless steel, or in PVD... They are a good starting platform for learning how to build.

But as Grimlocktime pointed out, there are much better cases out there for your dial. Do a search in the parts for sale on here, they come up very often...

"Well...There's your problem..."
:hehehe:

But, wait! Order a fiddy dial and hand set from DSN! That case will make a beautiful fiddy! Or you can sell it here and recoup your cost.

Dude, just ask your TD to take the watch apart and send it in three parcels, problem solved. You will know how the watch will look like once you've put it together and have all parts fitting so much less headache to assemble the piece. I've done it many times while I lived in Switzerland and most TDs will do it for you for free, just tell them you live In Switzerland;)
