What would be the range of thickness in leather used for a custom strap? I know much has to do with personal taste...but could we say 2mm-5mm in thickness? Also, could you use a nice leather from a piece of furniture (not the crappy stuff from WalMart)?

Many of you have already made amazing custom straps....could you help me out here?

Thanks

I know I've seen Klink write coherent posts...but I don't know what the hell this is supposed to mean.

Anyhow....2-4 mm seems to be the mainstream thickness these days. I have a custom 6mm, but its just just WAY to thick. I feels like I'm wearing a headband on my wrist.

mpala96, 2-5mm would be perfect in thickness range. Furniture/Upholstry leather is not really the best material to work with but it can provide decent results. At least the older furniture can. The newer upholstry leather is almost like plywood. It is not really leather hide, but composite leather. It is many leathers compressed together.

The "best" leather is a matter of opinion really. I mean what may look and feel good to one person doesn't to another. Most leather's are not sold by thickness but rather by what is called weight. Google a leather weight/mm conversion chart and you will see what the different weight thickness' are. I know this much, 5oz leather is 2mm thick, so you can go from there.

I find that 4mm thick straps are just right. Application also provides a part in leather descision as well. You wouldn't want to go near water with a distressed nubuck strap, where as a pigskin leather strap would have no problem. Hope you create a masterpiece!!

Remember though, you can make various thickness work. If you have some thinner leather, you can use 3 or 4 layers. If it's too thick, you can skiv it down and make it useable.

However, as noted, some garment leather is unsuitable or at least undesireable.

I personally like 4.5-5mm straps the best. But, it depends on the stiffness of the leather.

Hope this helps.

4mm minimum....5 is better....

thats what she said !

I agree with this and more on 5 mm. My point is that the thickness has something to do with proportional look. Since the PAM is quite thick watch, the thin strap like 2 or 3 mm will make it look unmatched, like skinny body with big head. When you take photo with the thin and thick straps, you can see this proportional clearly. The best is to have someone try it on and you look at it. It will be much different compares to when you look on your own wrist.

Klink sez "whatever floats your boat" ;)

I myself prefer 4mm-6mm

I LOVE my 6mm straps.. they have presence... and they make my 7.25" wrist look less small

Did you know that putting on a thicker strap could make up a bit for the smaller wrist size? ;)
