As soon as AP announced the 15510, I knew I wanted one to replace my ZF 15500. I never quite liked how empty the 15500 dial was with its shorter indices, and it seems AP didn't either, as the 15500 was only in production for half as long as the 15300 or 15400. And as nice as the ZF case and bracelet are, the dial (as on all ZF's) was sorely lacking in metallic lustre and sunburst.
A couple months ago, the MPF 15510 came out and although it appeared to use a less-than-ZF-spec 15400 case, I just had to have that dial. As both the MPF and my ZF 15500 V2 had the same Miyota, I figured the dials would be swappable, and at $300, it wouldn't be a huge risk.
Now the ZF 15510 was just announced a week ago, but not without its own flaws. It still uses the 15500 case and bracelet (Comparison between 15500 and thinner 15510 bracelet), it uses the Miyota from the 15500 V2 instead of the clone 4302 from the V3, and the dial still has that ZF plastic sheen, although it seems glossier than on the 15500's. Also, the 15510 should have larger tapisserie squares than the 15500, which the MPF seems to have gotten right and the ZF seems to carry over the same from their 15500.
I got the MPF in yesterday from TheOneWatches after a 3-week QC wait and 2 weeks shipping. The dial/movement swap was a little more involved than I thought, as the movement holder bracket, deco plate, and the rotor were not interchangable with both cases, thus I had to swap them around and they had to go back in their respective cases. So I have to run it with the gold 15500 rotor instead of the silver 50th anniversary rotor, which isn't too bad, the gold is pretty.
Pictures post-swap:
The result is not a perfect rep of the 15510, but neither is the ZF's offering. Given how there's currently a huge wait for the 15500 V3, there will probably be a decent wait for their 15510 as well. Both my watch and the new ZF use the 15500 case, so I don't feel too bad about using the 15500 rotor. You can tell a huge difference in the texture of both dials. In fact Hont had wrongly given me a QC for MPF's 15500 and it has a similar metallic dial. I'm very happy with this watch now, and although I'm sure ZF will correctly rep the 15510 case eventually, I do have doubts they'll ever get the dial right.
