At opening! Sometimes!
Never for closing efficiently! Never.

Cheap makeshift tools, are just that.
Do you own a cheap makeshift watch?

I almost exclusively use the rubber ball and do the last bit of tightening with my fingers, I've been able to get all of the watches I've done water resistant to 10 Bars.

It is one thing to make a seal...using fingers to tighten can make a seal take place, but will never guarantee that you will retain that seal. One slight bump, a change in temperature (ie putting it on your arm), any number of factors will break the seal which your fingers have created.
I seriously don't comprehend spending money on a sticky ball or other makeshift tool, when for under $30.00 you have and own for enternity, the right tool for the job. This guarantees you can apply the required torque to create a PERMANENT seal!
