Just curious about this. I know that you can damage a manual wind by winding too much.

What is different about an auto that keeps this from happening?

Autos have a clutch that slips to prevent overwinding. Unlikely you will over wind a manual if you stop when it tightens up .

"Overwound" is an Ebay term used to describe..>>

A watch with a broken movement!!
You would have to be a real moron to try to keep winding a watch once it was fully wound...And you'd probably need pliers to turn the damn crown!!
So if you see a watch FS that is describes as being overwound, just walk away...It's busted!!!:beatahorse:

In an automatic watch the mainspring barrel has a breaking grease (grease with graphite) applied to the barrel walls and a specially designed mainspring so when fully wound its just slips insted of snapping, so with the breaking grease it allows the mainspring to hold its wind until its fully wound and then it will slip. With an automatic movement you can wind it till the cows come home and you'll be fine.

Thank you! That answers my question perfectly.

To each his own.....

Thank you! That answers my question perfectly.

With all that said, I still wind my automatics 25x to energize the mainspring, purposely not "over doing" it...

Some automatics , you can hear it when they are fully wound . They wind silently and they start making noise when that mechanism start working .

The clerk at an ad once asked me to stop winding a Breitling auto for fear of hurting it...

Most time sales ppl know nothing about movts, but if its lubed correctly Theres no way of hurting the mainspring but it does add more wear on the reversing wheels and the auto winding setup but its built to withstand that, Atleast the swiss movts are.
