Can you manually wind a 7750?

Some of my cheaper reps are automatic, but you can wind them up when not in use. Others are strictly Automatic with no winding mechanism. I have a Navitimer 7750 on the way and am wondering if you can wind this mechanism? If so I remember reading somewhere that you should manually wind a mechanism a good bit before wearing the first time. If someone could fill me in it would be appreciated!

7750s can be manually wound. You can't over-wind them, either. If you wind them and wind them and wind them, it's ok.

With my 7750 watch, I wound it a bit, sized the bracelet and wore it. I suspect that full pre-winding is like running in cars: it used to be necessary, but it isn't any more. I'd be astonished if these watches we buy today weren't wound at least once, just for calibrating, if nothing else.

I wind all my automatic watches before I put them on.

I rotate through my rep DD, and Sub...and my gen Datejust. I don't have a winder, so they stop moving after a few days of not being worn.

I unscrew the crown, and wind the watch until the second hand is moving, then I wind it for about 20 seconds after that. I set the date, one day behind. Once the second hand hits 12, I pull the crown out and stop the movement. I foward the time, until the date clicks to the correct number...then I set the time. Push the crown back in...make sure it's working. Then I wind it for another 30 seconds or so, then screw in the crown and put the watch on.

Always seemed like a good, thorough way to "warm up" the watch movement...rather than just shaking the hell out of the watch to get it to start running.

Sounds like it works for you sgv but I would hate to do without my winder... Actually have another quad winder on the way!!!! :D

But I always get a kick out of reading the watch shaking posts. They make me laugh out loud :lol:

Hand winding is not a problem with 7750 but Ziggy doesn't recommended to hand wind automatic watches with ETA movement. I never, ever hand wind my ETAs... What's the point? They'll all start running flawlessly and keep excellent time when you just put them on your wrist. Stopped watch will start running from normal hand motions after a while, there's no need to excessively "shake them".

quote Ziggy:

---------------------------------------------------->
Asian 7750:
You can safely wind uni-directional models with the crown, because the automatic winding clutch is a click spring ratchet wheel, and is not prone to damage from hand winding.

ETA’s and most Swiss models, 2824-2, 2836-2, 2892-2, etc…
You can hand wind a bi-directional model, as long as you do so slowly, these models have automatic winding clutch wheels with click levers that will be damaged by fast or repeated windings.
