thinking of buying a JAXA type case wrench off the Bay. I don't think I can open by EXP I with it - but can it be used to open the PAMs or not?

thanks in advance.

Takashi,

Thanks for the advice. Am planning to buy from Atomix Tools and I wanted something that can open a few of my watches. The shipping is expensive!

Careful... I have a Jaxa and it only goes up to 38mm and my pam is 44mm. So be sure you find out the maximum size it will accommodate.

I did buy one of those blue 44 mm pam wrenches on ebay. Not cheap. With shipping I want to say it was $40 but it works flawlessly. I thought initially it was made out of plastic when I bought it but it is made out of quality metal but the fit and design is such it leaves no marks on the watch. Highly recommended.

Then, if the jaxe openers works problem free, why do we need the custom panerai style openers?

You don't have to adjust to fit the caseback with custom tools. You can get the job done slightly faster :) and less risk of slipping thus scratching the caseback.

You need special tools to open 47mm PAM. I believe the original JAXA (bergeon) and it's clone can't handle 47mm without modifications (like enzo's). However, 44mm and 45mm Radiomir should be OK.

I bought one of those metallic blue case openers from Atomix Tools. It works like a charm. No adjusting needed. No scratches!! Although I paid about $25 together with shipping, it was worth every penny.

a specialised tool is SO much nicer and doesn't bugger up the case. You can actually tighten the back down with some pressure and not worry about never getting it off.

---

Cheap alternatives that will work ... sticky balls, or reverse tape any kind of ball with duct tape to make it sticky. Silicon bath accesory suction cups are often very grippy. You can even grab them with slip-jawed pliers after applying them and really get some leverage.

I just successfully used the suction cup method to open the case on my PAM 111H.....It was uncanny how well it fit the 44mm case!!....No scratches, no marks, nothing.... and very easy to re-screw back to the original tightness.

The reason I opened up the back was to re-align the 'E' in the 'OFFICINE' decal because it was extremely crooked and about a half step above all the other letters.

I used a toothpick to slide the 'E' down and did my best to line it up properly.....The decals are self-adhesive.....I realize the Asian 6497 still looks far from the real thing, but at least it's no longer glaringly obvious to the naked eye....it looked pretty bad before and was kinda driving me nuts!

Thanks Enzo for saving me $25 because I was thinking of buying the Panerai tool from Atomix Tools on eBay.

Of course I don't plan on going swimming with my PAM anytime soon :D That's what my Seiko Monster is for.
