I thought I'd write about my recent experiences buying replicas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for anyone who's interested. I've seen a few people asking about Malaysia before but have never seen anything concrete about good places to find reps other than Petaling street (Chinatown).
I'm not claiming to be an expert at all and have only owned a couple of reps from your TDs - a black sub and a Steelfish.
I was put off petaling street because of all the sellers trying to get you to have a look at their stuff, most of which was poor quality, then starting their prices ridiculously high then asking how much I'd be willing to pay. Some did have some decent quality replicas, at least I thought they looked decent, however they often only had a small selection.
Sungei wang plaza was our next stop, the place is massive, it's got about 6 levels full of shops selling everything you could ever dream of buying. I saw a petshop that sold sugar gliders, them cute little things that glide from trees in the jungle! Of course there are plenty of shops flogging fake stuff, 90 percent of the people running them will try and get you in to 'have a look!' and start their sales patter, 'which one you like?' 'I make nice price for you'
*punches in a stupidly high price into a calculator, followed by one which is slightly lower and he claims is just for me - still very expensive*
followed by 'how much you wanna pay?' I know you gotta do what you gotta do to make a living but do these guys think tourists are stupid? Maybe some of them are but I don't like being treated like an idiot and that kind of selling really doesn't appeal to me! One guy was showing me this pam and was saying it was one of the better quality watches, he said he could guarantee it for one year, a few seconds after he said that the balance wheel stopped moving. I gave him a pat on the back and said 'I think I'll leave it mate' and walked off as he stood there shaking it.
The first place I bought a watch from was called Evotime, it's located in GM plaza (a short walk from chow kit station) which is about 6 levels of wholesalers, the stores in there are full of imitation designer goods among other products but the sellers aren't pushing for the sale and the prices aren't normally negotiable unless you're buying a few. Evotime is full of low quality replicas, the prices reflect the quality though unlike in petaling street where they'll happily charge you an arm and a leg for rubbish watches. I bought 3 G shocks for RM66 which is about £12.50. Most of the watches in here are battery powered, I asked to see the better quality watches and man showed me some nice looking Hublots. Me and my friend both bought one for RM260 which is just over £50.
A few days later we had to pop back because one of the watches had steamed up in the humid weather, he swapped it without hesitation, what a diamond.
Evotime also sells rolex and panerai style wallclocks, they look great and I'm a bit disappointed that I couldn't get one as my funds were low :-(.
The next shop we went to is called Lik Tiu trading, it's on the lower ground floor of Sungei Wang. It stood out from the crowd because it was manned by a nice young chap called joe, he wasn't pushy or over-friendly, he was polite, he knew his stuff and most importantly was honest. He was happy to show me any watch, didn't rush me and was didn't mind a little bit of bartering. I picked up a pam for RM220, I really like it.
Hopefully the details for these two shops can help someone in the future, I wanted to write about them because this forum has helped me so much!
I know the replicas available from the TDs are much better quality but for anyone in KL who fancies a few decently priced reps from decent people, these guys are the best I found. I'm sure there are other dealers in KL, some may be better and have better reps. Hunting around for watches is great, don't take my word for it, shop around and enjoy KL!!
