I think the general consensus would be to go to Canal St, go to a coffee shop, log into free wifi, and put in an order from a TD.

I'll let some of the locals chime in but my understanding is that you will NOT find TD quality reps in NY on the street.

I definitely would not buy anything from canal street. How long are you in NYC for? I live in midtown, shoot me a PM if you want to meet up. Ive got a large collection of PAM reps you could try on and purchase face to face if interested.

Yea you won't find anything of the quality like our tds have but going to canal street is always fun for the experience anyway.

I lived in NYC 13 years and bought dozens of Canal St watches over that time. Firstly, it's lots of fun, but true to common perception, 99.9% of the ones you see on display in the little kiosks are pure $h!te.

From my experience the only reps I found of equal quality to those you source from a TD were Cartier. But you'll never see them on display. I have a SS/white dial Calibre de Cartier which was made impressively well, and has held up for years - like 6, so far - but that exception aside, the rest of the reps from Canal street are pretty rough. You can inquire about Cartier - which probably feels shady the first few times you do it. Most of the time you'll get a 'no' from the vendors with store fronts, but every so often, they'll call another person, tell you to wait 5 minutes, and another dude will roll up with the watch you requested. Then the haggling begins. If it's really a decent copy, they're going to try to soaking 250-300 from you. I can tell you that the cheapies should be about $50, and the most I spent (on that Calibre) was $150. (but I'm a really tough negotiator - at some point I like to stuff the bills into the hand of my adversary and close their fingers around them).

In summary, unless you're going to invest your month in NYC tracking down a decent rep (which I strongly discourage - go hang out in Bryant Park, it's summer) and unless you're into costume jewelry, stick to TDs when it comes to buying a rep.

And please go up to my old nabe and eat a Levain chocolate chip cookie...

Welcome to NYC! Haha your best bet is to not.. The quality will be lacking. Very similar to AE watches. (Probably get them from them..). But enjoy! I'm uptown. I recommend Bryant park as well. Love it there. Also, wonder Central Park, and just enjoy. Looking for a drink? Stop at my buddies joint in Union Square. (Shoot me a PM if you want details!)

I completely agree with you, especially about Levain. Unless your old nabe is the upper west side, in that case OP just keep going north to the South Harlem one, never a line :)

Yeah we don't use the term canal street for no reason, I perused these shops at length for a few hours and when I asked a couple of guys for top quality watches.. Well they were just awful

stuff on display was terrible ap's and cheap Uboats which were $40 on Ali and they had $100 price tags, so he showed me his "quality" stuff he left the shop a come back with a couple of Rolex in his pocket, showed me a Gmt and sub which were still crap, like the one I got from aliexpress for £60

the only way you will get a good rep in NYC is buying one from another member here from NYC.

While walking the stretch of Canal St, look for small tiny red signs pointing you to the local massage parlors. Once you check into those outfits, ask to see the 'mamasan', the lady in charge. Show her your cash. Ask to see the best Reps she can produce. ..She will come back with a few.You may have to examine them well for faults. Have a couple of drinks while you are at it. Always be ready to walk. Sometimes, they are just not up to par. ........Good luck !! ...........And come early, lines can grow fast if you hesitate. http://www.dickhouse.tv/.a/6a0133f4950835970b019b0108faa3970b-pi
