Can it be justified to buy a datejust 36mm and swap the dial to gen Tudor's Oysterdate dial? Or would that be a stupid move?
Or should I somehow get all the parts separately and build that myself?
Thank you in advance.

you will need a 36mm vintage-style datejust case, then you need to change the caseback to a tudor one (because I think that all gen tudor oyster caseback have engravings). Problem with that though, is that rep casebacks may not be cross-compatible with other rep/gen caseback. Alternatively, you can get the datejust 36mm caseback engraved with tudor engraving by a modder.

another easier method would be to source a 36mm tudor in the first place (because those tudor reps have the caseback engravings done already). I have seen 36mm reps of tudor date-day before so maybe TDs here can still get them

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll try to find the rep somewhere, otherwise, will try to build it up myself.
And what about the movement?

Depends on which model / factory version you buy

The Date-Day ones run on ETA 2834 movements
The Date only ones probably run on either ETA 2824-2 / 2836-2

Your plan won't work. Gen dials are 27mm. It would fall through the rehaut of the 36mm DJ case. You would need a 34mm Rolex or Tudor case since those use a 27mm dial.
