Will a good rep always have a blueish tint from the AR in the sun? Real PAM have a more yellowish tint???

Bluish AR tint

I have only seen the bluish tint AR on the higher end reps, such as those sold by Davidsen. I also remember seeing the same bluish tint on a Titanium PAM that I tried on at Shreve in San Franciso.

BTW...If you love PAMS....Be sure to contact TSP per this thread:

He has generously agreed to give new members enough RW$ to buy 20 tickets in his raffle. Who knows, You might win one of his great PAM 111h models (not that you need 3 or anything).

Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable Paneristi will chime in here regarding the Blue tint vs. tint on the gens??

Please help this new member, guys and gals.

Thanks,

Before 2000, it was purple AR or no AR. Then it was blue AR. Yellow AR is news to me. *edit: regarding 111h

What color tint from AR will gen PAMs give?

The reps seem blueish but the gens seems to have a blueish tint as well? So both a good rep and a gen PAM will show a little blue tint in the sun? I am asking not telling? Thoughts?

That's the way I understand it.

Also, a little chemistry.

The AR tint currently used by Panerai is a vapor deposited Magnesium Flouride. When deposited on sapphire crystal or good quality mineral glass (high cobalt or lead contact) it is a bluish hue. That is my non-chemist's understanding. Vintage genuine PAMs may have the yellow tint, I do not know. But the ones in the AD store today have a bluish tint when held at an angle to the incident light.

Genuine PAM owners....feel free to chime in here.......

From prior post-

This is what I just read-
Quoted from Aquaracer regarding Davidsons-
"The biggest tell that anybody can see from across the room is the AR- Panerai AR is slightly yellow colored- ALL rep AR is blue or purple- A little sunlight glints off your watch- BUSTED. "

Older PAMs have yellow AR

A number of models have yellow, single sided, AR, particularly those made after 2000. Here's a pic of a gen PAM 74 which clearly shows it.

Of note, there are still several models that do not have AR that are currently in production. I don't think Panerai has moved to double sided AR yet, at least not with the selection of 2007 models that I've seen at my local AD.

FWIW - I just looked at 2 gens I have (111G and 183H) compared to a very nice rep (127) and this is what I saw.

This was all done under fluorescent lighting and I have a few drinks in me...

the 111 - had a slight greenish tint to it. very had to catch it under the light though
the 183 - I couldn't see anything on that one at all
the 127 - definitely a blueish purple that stood out.

Honestly, I've never noticed a tint on my gens until people around here started talking about it and this was the first time I ever even compared them. remember... this was just a 1/2 drunk guys observation. I'm sure some of the experts can confirm what the real deal is and why....

both of my gens have a purple tint from the ar, which is much more subtle and effective than the bright bluish at found on my Davidsen PAM. That said I don't think the rep is bad at all. But I do prefer the look on the gens obviously.

Both my PAMs are F series.

So...did we ever resolve this "blue lume" question.....Inquiring minds want to know. I just checked the Officine Panerai site and cannot tell a thing from the images there.
