I am interested in finding the best available vintage Rolexes, such as 1655, 1680, 1675, and for now not interested in 'frankening' or buy m2m. That leaves me with TD's I guess? Anyone in here that could recommend certain TD's and especially specific model that are as true to gen as possible?

Thanks

I have been into reps for over 10 yrs. Any out of the box 4 digit models simply are rubbish UNLESS you mod it? For example the lug holes needs to be redrilled to gen size, the inserts is a mess and that's before I start on the dial.

My advise is to find a model you like and buy the base watch, once you dug a bit deeper on this rabbit hole, use the watch as your base for modding (so you don't have waste money on buying another base watch). As you study the model you like, you will find flaws of your base watch which you can't un-see. Use the pearl as an example, once you had seen a gen pearl, you won't be able to stand the "pearl" on the rep. Some people will simply remove the pearl and leave a hole on the insert.

best vintage reps are JKF / BP and you’ll see them all together on the TS watch website. They’re not a TD, but any TD can get them.

They need work to pass as anything resembling a real one. Look in the vintage subforum for more info - not this one whuch is really about current models.

As muirmas mentions - JKF or BP factory make the best vintage Rolex reps. You can buy most of them for $100 a pop from TD Marvellous Replica. You can check out pics of the watches in his forum - see the stickied special offer threads.

Thanks for all answers so far. I understand the best way would be to buy the best possible rep and franken it, and perhaps I'll actually like that part :) I just want to get hold of a rep that at least in the beginning will feel totally fine w/o any modifications.

Best one to start with is a JKF 1680 in my opinion. Get the one with the white ‘Submariner’ and silver date wheel. Then read up on some ageing techniques. Also check out Popperinis shoal of submariners thread.

What others have stated, start with a base that you want and mod CGs, age hands and lume, have fun with it. Started with JFK base for a 5513.
