in 2000, i had moved from California to Tennessee for Optometry school. I filled my boredom with ebay shopping so I created a paypal account linked to my bank account so i can be a verified member.
by 2001 i called it quits and moved back to california for art school. I didnt close my bank account in Tennessee - i should have... but figured "someday, i'll return." The Tennessee account has close to 1 dollar left in it and still linked to PP.
the trouble started when i made a purchase off the bay. Paypal offerred two options: Pay with credit card, or pay with bank account. Well, since my linked bank account has 1 dollar in it ( i figured i could just unlinke it later - didnt want to loose that VERIFIED status, HUR HUR... sigh), i chose the credit card option. Low and behold, pp tries to pull 200 dollars off of my bank account!
I tried to find a contact number, but this was before the class action lawsuit so the only contact method was by email!
I emailed them asking for a phone number and asked why they pulled money from the bank account when i chose credit card. I also leet them know there's NO money in the account. They responded, telling me that the only method of support is through email. There is no phone support... read the terms of agreement. Then they go on to tell me that if i have a linked bank account, that even if i choose credit card, it will default to the bank account!
I replied asking why then is the credit card option even offerred if it just defaults to the bank account? but they replied with a cut and paste generic response. Anyways, i tell them to stop transaction as i try to sort it out with the bank in tennessee.
For the attempt to withdraw insufficient funds, i get charged 60 dollars... and an additional 20 dollars everyday it stsays negative. I'm talking with the bank now about it...
2 days later, i get another charge of 60 dollars! Apparantly PP tried to withdraw funds again! I emailed PP WHY oh mighty god WHY when i told them i had no funds there. PP's response was "Our systems attempts 3 times before resorting to other methods of payment." WTF!?!? I told them to stop, but they said "sorry, it's automated."
soooo... 2 days later again, another 60 dollar charge from the bank because of the attempt to withdraw funds... and by the time i finally got it resolved with the bank itself, it was -400 dollars. In teh end, the bank saw the ridiculousness of paypal and just zeroed my account and closed it.
I took off all major credit cards with pp and unlinked bank accounts. I vowed never to use PP again. 3 or 4 years later, i recieve in the mail a class action lawsuit pamphlet against pp. Sent my paperwork in, got a check for 50 dollars
now the bastards finally have a phone line.
...
welp... that's my story... sad to say though, but i'm back on PP again. I am however NOT linking my bank accounts... never ever ever.
I have another fine dandy PP story my G/F went through just recently... but i'll save that for later.
if anyone has some nightmare PP stories, feel free to share. i dont want to be alone in my rants
