It took them long enough, but finally the Australian parliament saw sense.
PRESS RELEASE: Abbott and Shorten reach bi-partisan agreement on boat people.
PRESS RELEASE: Abbott and Shorten reach bi-partisan agreement on boat people.
Following the shortest debate ever recorded in the Australian Parliament some Boat People are now allowed to immediately seek asylum in Australia. Although the motion had bi-partisan support by both major parties as well as the Palmer United Party, Greens leader Sarah Hansen-Young rejected the proposal on behalf of her party.
Both Tony Abbott and Bill Shorten stated that this should not be seen as a precedent, however they would trial fast-tracking the integration of a specific group of asylum seekers into the Australian community on humanitarian grounds. In a never before seen gesture of confidence in the motion, members of both major parties graciously agreed to accept a boat person into their own home.
