Well, a bad Jewel would couse differnt problems then a jumping(studdering) second hand. a cracked or broken jewel would lead to the stoping of the watch.
Dirty jewels also can lead to the second hand jumping. this can also build up to be an abrassive and can wear away over time the wheel pivot leading to it's needing to be replaced.
The main reason for the "jumpieness" in these lesser jewel movements is friction, the jewels cut down on friction, the more jewels the smoother it runs, fewer, the rougher it runs.
