Hello all,
Hope you are all well. A few months ago I posted a thread about fixing up my black bay 58 which had multiple issues such as a dial indice falling off, the movement completely broken and the bezel impossible to rotate to name a few. This watch was my first automatic watch and worn it for many special occasions, so it has a sentimental value to me.
The lovely ward1991 had posted a message to contact him to get it repaired for free, and for me to cover the parts. This is one of the nicest things a stranger has done for me on the internet, and I really appreciate his work.
To begin the movement was broken. The diagnosis was "somehow your whole automatic winding works along with the rotor became completely detached inside, the winding works are held on with two screws, both screws were completely backed out and loose inside, clanging around. I disassembled most of the back side of the movement and reassembled, sadly it seems that your balance wheel's spring has been damaged by all of the parts floating around inside of the case."
From that we decided to purchase a new 2824 movement to put in instead (around 65 dollars). He also fixed the dial with a little bit of loctite. While disassembling the watch, he put the case and the bracelet for ultrasonic cleaning, which fixed the poor bezel action. He also greased the seals with silicone grease.
Unfortunately when putting it back together, the watch hands were stretched/enlarged, likely from being installed with too much force. Replacement hands were ordered from WSO for 20 dollars.
He tested the movement too afterwards to check it was running smoothly and keeping time.
After this, he offered to rebrush the bracelet and buff it with cape cod which made the watch look fantastic!
After this it was shipped back from the US to the UK and it came pretty quickly to me. It was boxed up absolutely bomb proof. Getting it in hand was amazing, looks even better in real life than it does in the photos. I was blown away by his work. He absolutely smashed it out of the park.
Overall, I would really like to thank ward1991 for the amazing work, it was a super kind thing to do to get my first watch back from the dead. I really appreciate it.
Would also like to thank the community for coming to my aid, had a couple messages from other offering advice and some offering help too which was really kind. Attached are the photos from before to after, with some compulsory wrist pic!
Please, everyone show some love to ward1991 for his great work and his kindness!
