Any other suggestions for modifying a DD4130?

I have a Panda Daytona from clean (v3) inbound from Steve, I’m happy with the watch from what I’ve seen and heard about it, but I am planning to add a genuine balance-complete and chronograph seconds wheel in order to improve its long term reliability (and also because using a chrono is fun!)

My whole plan is to just make the watch as reliable as possible without necessarily breaking the bank, I have no plan to change the dial, hands etc to gen (besides the Crystal itself in the long term due to the slight blue tint in Clean Daytonas)

Any other suggestions for modifying a clean Daytona? I heard some people change the gasket to a gen as it doesn’t break the bank either

Kind regards!

That’s a pretty good set of mods to make the movement / watch gen-like. I think you’ll also want to swap the 2nd wheel to be gen… the new version of the 2nd wheel also has LIGA teeth to eliminate backlash. I haven’t don’t this mod, so I’m not 100% sure it’s compatible with the dd4130, but it’s very likely to be compatible.

Would be interested myself. I am a long-time lurker of Reptime and to a lesser extent here. JUST made my first rep order ever and it includes a v3 Clean Daytona as well (black). First thing I want to do is find someone who I can trust to do the servicing post-delivery and maybe some replating on a Bluesy VSF sub I have coming, but next order of business is mods.

Hopefully you find someone local! I may have a potential local watchmaker in Ireland but not sure if they would work on 4130s, might have to go send it out to a trusted maker in the forum or reptime.

Plating would perhaps be easier to find locally though

Appreciate the help! I’ll consider this too for the long term. I personally don’t really plan buying another rep anytime soon (that’s what we all say, right?) as I’d rather have a long term functioning Daytona that’s still a fraction of the cost of the real thing

If it wasn’t so hard to get one from an AD I’d have been happy to save the money but I’m not willing to play silly games to buy things I don’t want for the thing I want

Sounds like a good plan... I made a thread about doing this exact mod to a 4130 back when I was just starting out in watch making. It's a fun and relatively easy modification to make.

Just read the entire thread, makes me curious about trying to invest into my own equipment to start watchmaking (even if it’s to the extent of just knowing how to replace a part or two)

Great work!

Watchmaking is a fun hobby. And getting started only requires small screw drivers, tweezers, steady hands, and some patience. But I would suggest starting on a movement that’s cheaper snd simpler than the 4130… a Unitas 6497 is a great place to start. It’s a manual wind pocket watch movement that costs about $30 and is very simple to work on. If you can disassemble the 6497, put it back together, and have it tick again; you’ll be in a good place to start working on Rolex movements.
