Anti-shock , water resistance - worth paying for?

I know the water resistance topic has come up frequently on the forums. One aspect of David Sen's PVD that pleases me immensely, and caused me to commit, is that he's having the pieces tested to 3 ATM, so this is a decent water resistant piece, which I can use around the pool, on the beach etc. Great!

But I also got thinking that I'd be willing to pay extra for anti-shocking. I don't know if something like the gens' "incabloc" anti-shock can be manufactured into the reps, but it would be great not to have to baby these rugged looking watches so much. I wouldn't expect something that needs to withstand a bloody pounding (tho' my Seiko Divers has taken some rough love, and still is reliable and cost USD 350 or so ...), but the occasional bump.

Do you agree? If so, how much extra are these attributes worth (ie water resistance, anti-shock)?

hehe
silly wabbit,
all the newer (as in whats in your reps) unitas movements are Incabloc shock protected!

Im sure even the chinese movements are Incabloc shock protected too.

the only difference between the nice swan neck rep and the real thing is $3300.00 dollars.

Really?! I had no idea (clearly, only learn by asking, right).

But then I've had more than 1 issue w/ a bumped Pam (even later movts, and Swiss for that matter) and had issues. So perhaps the issue is that "anti-shocking" is not as generalized or robust as I thinkl (??)

Appreciate the info - as I'm not one to pull my pieces apart to compare w/ the gen.

Unfortunately I am not very familiar with these big pocket watch movements or genuine Pams but I have been told repeatedly by people who own them that buying one is very anticlimactic if you’ve had one of these newer reps.
I see there is some discussion about the hairspring getting tangled on these from being bumped around. I suppose that’s just a problem you have to deal with when you have such a big hairspring and escape wheel.

The one genuine Unitas based watch out there right now that interests me is the Omega Railmaster XXL! Now that movement has had some serious work done by Omega.
A Unitas powered Railmaster XXL would also be an awesome rep!! I would buy two!
Eddie Lee if you are listening its time to work your magic!

Hey Brad - the one that you bumped was not an ETA or an ETA copy. (I think)

Yes it is, a Swiss ETA - verified by Ziggy. And it was only a wee bump, so light that I didn't give it any thought ....

I didn't realise this either. I beat the absolute shit out of my watches, especially my PAMs. I get in the pool, shower & hot tub, mow the lawn, work in the yard, go rock climbing, shoot guns, play sports, go running, etc. Basiclly, I do everything with a watch on and I have not had one of my watches skip a beat. They all keep great time and only have a few little scratches.

I guess I may have to watch what I am doing a little more. LOL

I think this happens to my 036 today. Knocked it off my table and the movements stops moving (despited a full wind). Sending it to zig for relume and repair.

Yeah Sure. I am not in a hurry. I expect to get back my watch in August though (I will be away from 2May to late July).

111H

Well, @Tutima told me to let my 111H wind down, then knock on it both sides of the case: it started ticking again a couple of times, I assume that the spring has been caught and knocking it un-kinked it, permitting it to wind down.

Re-wound this AM (not fully) and when I got home it appears to be keeping good time again - yay!

Thx Tutima!

Cheers, BBB :p

127 went in the pool

Well, I threw caution to the wind y'day - got my most expensive PAM, an engaved 6497 Swiss ETA 127, and went in the pool. I was nervous as hell - but all is OK! I'll post some pics later as proof.

I wonder if Josh's 127 is ATM tested to any degree prior to sending out: I am impressed that it was water resistant.

I'll be a lot less nerve-wracked about doing this w/ Davidsen's PVD ....ultimately, I guess you get what you pay for; I don't assume that water-resitance applies to all my PAMs.

That sucks Takashi!

I also dropped my 172 on the floor when going through airport security (grrrr) and it stopped beating (Swiss ETA); sent it up to Zig and now returned as good as new - so you should be OK.

Best of luck with that,
