Another "fooled a watchmaker" story

Well, I'll keep this short.
Wife and I were shopping nice electronics at a local store, when during a discussion the salesperson accosted my wrist.
He said "Is that a Panerai? I've been looking for this model for a long time, but the timing and locations were never right."
This guy seriously held my (sizeable) wrist in both his hands and stared for 15 full seconds, with his nose around 10 inches away. It was a bit uncomfortable, but I allowed this. It turns out that this older gentleman is a watchmaker, with recently expired Rolex certs, who collects and works on everything under the sun. Being a gregarious sort, the electronics job is just to keep him from getting cabin fever at home. He still keeps his own Rollies in shape by making his own parts, as he cannot purchase directly any longer.

For the rest of my visit with him, I noticed that he could not restrain himself from incessant, admiring glances to my left wrist.
He was wearing a nice Ti Breitling Avenger gen.

Winner = Belial2K Fiddy.

I should add that I did not precipitate this encounter; he noticed my watch and had my wrist in his hands quick as a flash.
Those old guys can be quick - lol.

LOL I'm usually the guy doing the gawking. :lol:

Nice story! I catch people looking at my 111H from across the resturant, not because they know Panerai
but because they can tell the time on it from 50 feet away! :wink:

no foolin'

Here's one for you. My son Ian enjoys wearing some of my reps from time to time. We were at the mall one day and he had on my "perfect" YachtMaster. We went into Longs Jewelers an AD for Rolex. We split up fo a sec and when I looked for him he was at the counter handing the YachtMaster over to one of the Salesmen behind the counter. I almost had a heart attack. I rushed over just in time to hear the guy say "that is a beautiful Yachtmaster and in such great shape" and he handed it back to him. I said "Ian we gotta run ok buddy" and out we went. I told him not to do that again. Hey he's only 14. What did I expect.

Great story man!! Did u ask him if he worked on reps?

Nope, but I know he's worked on gen PAMs, so I'm sure he knows his way around a 6497.
He claims to own an AP Royal Oak in gold and several Rollies and Breitlings among others.
His wife wants to kill him... LOL The AP was supposedly valued above 40k; I'm guessing that's MSRP on the chrono.
I take it he has a nice shop still set up at home, based on our discussion.

Guys like this make me wonder if there is any merit to the idea of getting blank or non-serialed casebacks, and putting custom numbers (accurate to production runs) for sale. No more worrying about someone seeing the same number on your watch that all the other reps have.
Hmmm....

Sorry-
As pointed out by watchlover, it is indeed the Belial2k "Fully Modded" Fiddy.
This thing is simply gorgeous, drawing looks from any distance.

Very interesting stories. I have attended more than one GTG as they are called with my 111 and have not raised a single eye brow among the 'indoctrinated', lol. Also been to a couple of ADs and had them take a good look, with lots of compliemtns. :D

Hey no offense- but there's NO WAY you could show a 111H to a Panerai owner- have him look at the movment, and fool him- especialy at a GTG-

Sure on the wrist who's gonna know?? Nobody... I've had Panerai guys grab my Davidsen Fiddy and gush over it- But I won't take it off the wrist...

You = [smilie=violent1.gif]

I don't think anyone should EVER try to go to Gen GTG's and pass their watch as a gen. The whole point of reps is to enjoy them yourself not to try to pass them as real?!?!

Illustration of a "frisky" paneristy 2 seconds after attempting to grab my wrist to take an uninvited close look at my rep. :)
