HI guys,

I'm taking care of my 3 week baby girl at nearly 4am, so please bear with me... :D

How can any company justify charging 950 Eur (1.130 USD) for a small piece of steel?

It's not like it's made of gold or anything...
it's because it's alluminum, not steel.

Jokes aside, you just can't tell "for a piece of steel" or whatever, why don't you say the same for collectible stamps? Or pokemon cards? Or even for a full watch, it's still a piece of steel. There's obviously something you miss in that hobby.

They charge so much because of the rarity of a genuine Rolex LV bezel there are a finite number of them in the world. People try to replicate it through platinum plating (it's 5 digit insert my mistake) but it will never be exactly the same as a genuine one.

There is no platinum plating there, they are not ceramic..

because of behavioural economics, scarcity, and exclusivity - but definitely not because of the bezel's intrinsic value (i.e. like what you said, it's just a bezel with paint)
1. 16610 LV is hyped up to be collectible because of limited availability
2. therefore 16610 LV parts are scarce and command a higher asking price (especially if it is sealed in its plastic box - RSC parts)
3. some rolex stuff is considered to be veblen goods - e.g. the 16520/116520 were just an average Rolex watch in the second hand market until a random price hike.. and now they are pretty attractive pieces purely because of a price hike IMO

when it comes to justifying the purchase, it depends on what perspective one holds, e.g.
1. utilitarian consumers would find this overpriced for a piece of aluminium bezel insert when casio F91w can be bought for $10
2. consumers with conspicuous consumption would determine that there is the 'feel-good' factor in buying this expensive bezel insert as means of displaying wealth or reinforcing their feelings
3. collectors for parts may see an opportunity to buy it simply because they 'collect' for rarity
4. franken people like me would probably pounce on a second hand one if i could also source a gen LV dial
etc

Fair enough.

I'm pretty new to the watch world, so I had no idea the LV had been decommissioned and that its parts are now subject to what I call "collectible economics". I thought you could just go to a Rolex dealer and buy the part from them.

Fascinating what you can discover when you can't sleep. :)

Cheers

Rolex will not sell you any parts actually.

That is overpriced even with it's scarcity.

These do come up on the Rolex forum reasonably often and the dearest I have seen one is around $600 which is still a ridiculous amount but hey no-one is bending our arms to buy.

You're all wrong, it's a pointed 4 insert in blister pack, barely worth more than $350 - $400 in the real world, but the seller walks the fine line between scammer and profiteer - and is well known for it -never buy anything off that asshole - his prices are ridiculous.
