Hi everyone,

I have an (rep) Asso strap that I love. However, when I see pictures of all other Asso straps in the sales threads, I notice that a majority of them had a somewhat "mottled" look They look a bit aged. Mine has a finish that is very even.

Is there a way to achieve this kind of look? Someway to age the strap?

Oil it with a good leather conditioner. Pecards leather dressing is one I recommend.

I have used baseball glove oil with good success.

Keep in mind this will darken the strap substantially.

Just use a plain oil, i used olive because i was drunk and felt the need to mod my strap that moment. Olive oil worked out fine, just gently apply with your finger on the strap.

Obenauf's heavy duty LP
Leather protector

I highly recommend it
One small tub will last a lifetime

This will also darken the strap (which is a good thing for the rep asso but maybe not for other straps)

I've read a lot of great things about Obenauf's heavy duty LP, but I could not find it locally and didn't feel like waiting for shipping, then I remembered seeing the post about glove oil which I could pick up in the sporting goods store down the street.:D

Good luck and post some before and after photos. I meant to take some but forgot until I was already half way done.

Every time I use any products to age leather it gets too dark for my liking... best thing to do is just wear it, It'll age on it's own fast enough, you'll see.

You should try a light coat of leather dressing, then use a hair dryer to help it dry out.

Whats leather dressing?

It is different than most conditioners. It's almost like a thick jelly/jam. One small tub will last years.

Here is the description from Pecards:

It is based on a petroleum lubricant similar to vaseline, with additions of selected waxes including beeswax. It is a dressing which penetrates the leather, allows the fibres to bend and move without chafing and breaking, coats the fibres to inhibit oxidation, and helps maintain a desirable level of moisture in the leather.

Here is the description from Obenauf's:

Three natural oils are suspended in Beeswax and Propolis. In the leather these oils gradually seep out of the Beeswax/Propolis suspension formula. If exposed to heat or flexing the oils are released faster so leather gets oiled instead of parched and cracked. This Beeswax/Propolis* Suspension Formula provides a time release lubrication to inner fibers while the surface is reinforced against scuffing, and the leather still breathes. The result is Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP:

Repels water better and longer.
Repels acids, petroleum, salt, and chemicals.
Restores dried leather to a soft and supple condition and protects it from further damage.
Prevents dry rot and resists mildew.
Resists premature cracking in flex areas.
Is odorless after applied (very important for hunters)
Restores sun-faded leather.
Resists scuffing and dry rot.
Applies easily with with a clean cloth.
Penetrates deeply into leather.
Can be buffed to shine or polished over.
Contains no harmful silicones, petroleums, solvents, or neatsfoot.

Obenauf's heavy duty LP and Pecards are two of the best dressings.
