I just came across the following information that PAM ADs scratches a unique number sequence on PAMs that are sold in their stores and boutiques. My GEN have this number as well, visible with a 3 x magnifier. Here is a pic from the web. Anyone heard about this before?

In this photo on lug, is the code scratched? Looks like just scratches. Never seen, never read and sounds weird.

My AD confirms. They mark all steel PAMs. My GEN is marked with 101679

Did you hear this from someone, or read somewhere? If you read, could you share the link?

I spoke to my AD directly.
As I was working on verifying that a GEN PAM was purchased there. They informed me that they mark all steel PAMs. I will post a picture tomorrow showing the man made AD number scratched into the lug.

Maybe this is some kind of practice of individual boutiques, or just that? I saw a photo of the steel gen panerai of recent years without these scratches. Anyway, this is some weird way, having serial numbers scratching watches to confirm something .... I'm embarrassed ...

Caseback can be changed out or swapped, this may be a ploy to link the case to the boutiques where its sold.

Scratch? They don't do engraving? Also, is this authorized by Panerai? Sounds strange when it's only done on steel watches. What's the point then?

To the naked eye it looks like scratches but with a magnifier it’s numbers. I will check my AD receipt and see if the number engraved are matching.

Hard to see with the naked eye but a number sequence is engraved on the lug.

Sorry mate but that is such a poor engraving, you were right to call it scratches. My goodness what was the AD thinking when they scratched up a perfectly fine watch? I really don't see the point of doing that to identify the watch as being sold there. I would write Panerai demanding that the case be replaced because of this unthinkable act of vandalism, frankly speaking. Looking at just 2 samples of this scratching, it is clear the AD has neither the equipment nor the know-how to engrave properly. The numbers are barely legible (even with a smaller font, an expert should be able to do engrave it with the right tools). Heck, the placement isn't even the same (one is along the length of the lug and the other is across the width), and we only have 2 samples. How random is that? Okay the excuse of letting a five year old take a dremel (because that's what it looks like) being to link the case to a boutique, to what end? Will the scratches do away with requiring you to provide a receipt and warranty papers when claiming warranty? Sorry for the rant. This whole situation has my blood boiling.

I agree with mysterio. I'd call Panerai at the very least to satisfy my Own curiosity and get to the bottom of what they're doing and why. And how. As well as expressing some disgust at how they're marking up a brand new case and maybe even put a stop to it.

Only steel models but not gold or platinum, huh?

Also, maybe see if you can somehow get a part or two out of the situation. I don't yet know how. Just a thought.

I think this is a strange practice for a particular boutique. I agree with Misterio, and would call it vandalism. It is not very clear how they weighed the risks of this initiative. I would not believe that the panerai gave them such an order. The opportunity to understand only for themselves that they sold this watch compensates for complaints from buyers? Not sure. Okay, it remains to be happy that they decided to scratch with a needle in an inconspicuous place the number, and not the name of the seller, the date and number of the shift and, perhaps, the text of the advertising partners on the crystal.
