Hello my friends, I need your advice!

I got this beautiful Avenger II GMT from GF and I really love it. Unfortunately it has a movement issue and I don´t understand what´s causing it.

When I received the watch it was running at +9 seconds/day, not great but not too bad either. After wearing the watch for a few days I realized it was gaining about 20 seconds/day. This change in rate made me a bit surprised and confused. I opened the watch to adjust the timing only to find that the fine adjustment screw was alreay turned down to the bottom. So I removed the auto winding module and used the coarse adjustment lever, I put the auto winding module back and used the fine adjustment screw to make the watch run at +1s/d. So far so good. After a few days the watch started to run faster and faster again (October 12 +1s/d, October 13 +1s/d, October 14 +4s/d, October 15 +9s/d). I turned the fine adjustment screw down a bit more and left it running at -6s/d, that was on October 16. The rate has increased since and today on November 3 it´s running at +8s/d, still climbing.

Is there anybody here who knows what makes a watch run faster and faster like this? I have never heard of this before and I can´t find any useful information about it anywhere. If anybody has any clue about how to fix this, please let me know. I´m currently considering replacing the balance assembly. Do you think that would fixt this issue?

Any advice will be highly appreciated!

It's quite possible your watch is magnetized, which can cause this behavior. De-magnetize it.

Thank you for your advice! Unfortunately it”s more complicated than that. I have tested it and ot is not magnetized.

It could be caused by a dirty/oily hairspring as well. Inspect the hairspring to see if it is sticking together at any point of it's spiral. If it is, then it needs to be cleaned.

I will put it on my demagnetizer anyway. It can do no harm.

I will check the hairspring. Thanks for the advice.

I agree on this. My watch had the same problem (too much oil) and it got fixed by cleaning the spiral.

I can’t see the hairspring sticking together but it might still be a fact that it does.

I tried to practice some watchsmithing on a cheap, spare movement I have.

I got the balance assembly off.

I got everything back together again but now the movement will not start.

It’s not a big deal as I bought this movement for practice (and I have another one to practice on as well).

Anyway, this leads me to think I better send my Avenger II GMT to a forum watch smith to be sorted. I don’t have the skill.

Thanks for all of your help. I will keep on practicing.

it's hard to check it with the photos, try to clean the hairspring, be sure it's in perfect shape and clean and then see if it's still running fast.

Your case seems to be what has also happened to me that by adjusting the regulator arm I accidentally hit the hairspring and made two spirals to touch.

Thank you for your input guys!

Whatever is causing this issue (dirt, too much oil, a bent hairspring) repairing it is above my ”pay grade”. The movement I used for practice died on me so I don’t dare to attempt this repair/cleaning to my beloved Avenger GMT. I need (a lot) more practice before I do.

I have contacted BlutRune and hopefully he will help me out with this.

Thanks again, guys! I appreciate your effort.

Mate you can also go to your local watchsmith just with the balance wheel to check it. If it's that problem it's an easy fix for every watchsmith.

Thanks VIV54 that’s good advice, and I appreciate it.

Unfortunately I don’t really have a local guy to take it to. The only watchsmith in this little town is actually retired and does not work on automatic movements anymore. He only changes batteries on quartz watches and sells watch straps two days a week. The watchsmith in the next town is an arrogant, self entitled POS and I wouldn’t take it to him if my life depended on it, besides he wouldn’t do shit to help me anyway.

I hope to hear back from BlutRune soon.
